MINUTES OF MEETING
'.August 9th, 1 946
The members attending this meeting were Henry Bush, Ed Tayloe,
Pierson Scott, lamed Randolph, Elizabeth Chamberlaine, Louise Simmons,
and Isabel Nunnally.
After the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting by the
Secretary, Mr. Tayloe moved the minutes be approved as read. It was
so ordered.
Mr. Bushrreported that Mr. Fife, the lawyer, had read the
suggested Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance, end could find nothing
wrong with the legal wording of the ordinance as submitted. He stated
there would be nothing intthe wording of the ordinance that he would
alter, but that we might have a hard time selling it to the public.
It was then suggested that the Secretary write a letter to
each member of the Board of Supervisors and send a copy of the
Zoning Ordinance to them, so that at their next meeting, they would
be prepared to approve or disapprove the suggested ordinance. Mr.
Bush and any other member of the hommission available to attend
the meeting would do so and find out what the Board of Supervisors
thought of the ordinance.
Mrs. Nunnally suggested that in the event the Board of
Supervisors approved of the ordinance, that a definite campaign
be started in 06tober to educate the public on the subject of
zoning. Mr. Bush suggested that Mrs. Nunnally write Mr.Locke
of Arlington, Va. and ask him to meet with us in Octoberand
give us a talk on zoning. The meeting is to be an open one
and representatives from each organization in the county are
tol.-Wi.nvited to attend. Several members of the commission stressed
the necessity for having the right propaganda in order to make
a success of the zoning ordinance.
Mr. Bush reported that Mrs. Smith had called him about
a letter received from Governor Tuck suggesting that everyone in
the state cooperate with the oil companies in th*itneffort to put
up bill boards advertising suitable historical and recreational
places of interest to the tourist. The reaction of the commission
was unfovorable to such a project, and it was suggested that the
commission go on record as disapproving of such a plan. It was
felt that if the oil companies wished to put out kigh way maps
showing the location of such places of interest in Vir#inia, it
would be a good alternate plan to carry out.
It was suggested that the commission get in touch with
the group appointed by the Chamber of Commerce for the beautification
of the city and county. Mr. Greig is head of this group. It was
reported later that the present plan of the group was to beautify
the road going to Monticello by planting trees and shrubbery all along
the road, and that their plans were limited to this specific
undertaking.
There being no further business, the meeting wasz:adjourned.
