HomeMy WebLinkAbout05 09 1947 PC MinutesMINUTES OF MEETING ALBEMARLE COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSION MAY 9TH, 1947 At this meeting in the County Office Building, there were present Messrs. Bush, Randolph, Cockrell, Scott, Tayloe, Miss Mary Stamps White, Mrs. Simmons and Mrs. Nunnally. Mr. Bush reported that several meetings had been held in the different county districts. As these meetings were attended bycitizens who voiced definite disapporval to the proposed zoning ordinance, Mr. Bush felt it would be wise to shilve the zoning program until the public could be sold on the idea of zoning. The commission heartily agreed with Mr. Bushts decision, and the supervisors were notified.of t.i S Mr. Tayloe felt the opposition to zoning arose from the fact that the farmers of Albemarle do not fancy regimentation of any kind. Therefore, the farmer would have to be sold on the idea before it could be made into a law of Albemarle. Mrs. Smith thought the idea of zoning had not sunk deep enough into the public consciousness. She stated there were always congenital opposers to every civic movement, and time should be allowed to educate the public to the benefits of zoning. The comission as a whole expressed approval of �Wwl zoning for the co$tty — and felt it would be of definite benefit to the community, but also felt that unless the majority of the people in the county approved of it ---such a law could not be passed or put into effect. Mrs. Nunnally was instructed to contact the State Planning Board and notify them of the step taken. The question of dissolving the planning commission then came up for discussion. It was agreed to wait until fall before making a final dAcision on thk matter. adjourned. There being no further business, the meeting was f � � Mrs. Nunnally notified the State Hoard and two representatives met with her to discuss the situation. Mr. y. :. Barnes and R. A. Pillow, reported that so much opposition to be zoning had been expressed in the other Virginia counties that the Board had abandoned the present system of zoning the counties and =mx approaching it from a different angle. The new system would be ttLed out through the Highway Department., under heading of "Strip zoning along the highways." They suggested that the Commission mark time until the State Board had worked out the details — and presented to the County Ccamissions. This program would be ready for presentation by fall. 0
