MI nutes of Meeti ng of
May 14, 1948.
Members present were Messrs. Bain, Randolph, Johnson,
Birdsong, Tayloe and Robinson and Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Simmons.
Mr. Randolph reported on the two previous meetings
of the zoning committee. Dr. Birdsong suggested that members of
the commission make personal calls upon individuals in their
communities, explain the detai 1 s of the zoning proposals and
their purposes, and interest them in coming to the public meeting
that will follow.
Mrs. Smith and Mr. Randolph reported on the meetings
called in Greenwood, Covesville, North Garden and Free Union by
Mr. W. B. Christian of Ivy for the purpose of forming the so—
called "Citizens Protective Association" whose first purpose
appears to be organizing opposition to zoning.
Mr. Robinson recommended that members of the com—
mission attend all of the community meetings to learn exactly
what objections may be raised. Mr. Tayloe suggested that as a
result of stimulation of thinking on the subject of zoning, all
facts are discovered,in which event there will be no doubt about
the ultimate outcome.
After full discussion it was decided to prepare a
fui i information campaign to carry to the public before making
any recommenda'tl ons to the supervisors. Secretary was directed
to so Inform the supervisors.
Secretary was asked to write to Richmond for 1000
copies of Dollars and Sense, and a supply of the outline of the
proposed Highway Ordinance. Secretary is also to assemble — from
Richmond, the Extension Division and any other sources, reliable
information that may be used to supplement materials on hand for
an education campaign. Mrs. Smith was asked to bring back from
Loudoun further material on their zoning experiences, and results
of the ordinance now in effect there.
Secretary was directed to write W. S. Christian invik
ing him and his central committee to attend next meeting of tlannigg
Commission. William B. Speck of the League of Virginia Counties
Is also to be invited to attend.
There being no further business, the meeting ad—
journed.
