building materials include brick facing, off-white stucco, and green window and building trim.

• A pole-mounted sign at the entrance into the site (left side when entering). This sign will have to be
removed for the proposed sign to be installed.
• Channel letters on the west side of the building facing 5th Street reading"Holiday Inn".
• A tall,pole-mounted cabinet at the southwest corner of the site. The pole is painted green and the sides
of the cabinet are green. The face matches that of the currently proposed sign.

ANALYSIS:
• The ARB Design Guidelines state that only the message portions of internally illuminated signs should
be illuminated. The proposal does not indicate that any portion of the proposed sign is intended to be
opaque.
• The ARB guidelines indicate that sign materials should compliment the building being served by the
sign. Brick is the primary material of the building. There appears to be no significant amount of bronze-
finished metal on the building. A brick base would coordinate better with the building than the proposed
metal one.
• The plan shows the sign at a low point in the swale between the parking lot and the Entrance Corridor.
In this location, the lower portion of the base of the sign will only be minimally visible. (It is visible to
northbound traffic for a short period of time.)However, the site plan on which the proposed sign location
is shown does not include the property line for the Holiday Inn site. It is anticipated that the sign location
may shift slightly from what is shown on the plan to maintain the required 5' setback. This shift may
increase the visibility of the sign, including its base.
• Landscaping exists on both sides of the entrance into the site. Some of this landscaping is located close
to the proposed sign location. Landscaping — existing, new, or a combination of existing and new —
should be utilized to better integrate the sign into the overall site and to provide a more coordinated
appearance throughout. Proposed landscaping can be reviewed with the revised sign location.
• If the sign is installed in the swale, wet site tolerant plants should be used.
• The sign meets Zoning Ordinance requirements for area and height. The existing sign at the entry wall
have to be removed.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Staff recommends approval of a final Certificate of Appropriateness for the freestanding sign, with the
following conditions to be approved administratively by staff:
1. Only the words"Holiday Inn" shall be illuminated. Provide revised drawings that clearly confirm this.
2. The base of the sign shall be brick to coordinate with the building.
3. Accurate color numbers shall be provided for all proposed sign colors. Indicate which numbering system
is being used.
4. Show the proposed location of the sign on a site plan for parcel 55C.
5. Landscaping shall be provided to help integrate the sign into the site. Provide a landscape plan. Plants
in the swale shall be wet site tolerant.
6. This approval includes no window signs. Window signs require a separate application and additional
review by the ARB.
