The undersigned respectfully request that the Albemarle County
Board of Zoning Appeals deny the request of Boar ' s Head Enterprises
for a variance to increase the size of the Boar ' s Head Inn sign at
the entrance on US Route 250 West . This request violates the
scenic highway designation accorded to US Route 250 West , and would
lower property values in this predominately residential area .
Since the current sign adequately directs traffic to the Boar ' s
Head Inn, no hardship has been demonstrated to justify a variance .

Dear Mr . Kennedy:
This letter is to express our dismay at the request of Boars Head
Enterprises to erect a freestanding sign on Route 250 West having a
total of 64 square feet in replacement of the tasteful one now present
which is already larger than the 18 square feet permitted on scenic
byways.
Route 250 West has been designated a scenic byway, and we urge you to
reject this variance so that it may remain so for all travelers and
residents to enjoy. This entrance to the Boars Head Inn is also the
sole entrance to two residential communities, Ednam Village and Ednam
Forest , whose residents strongly object to the commercialization of
the entrance to their private homes.
If the variance is granted, it will encourage other businesses,
restaurants, motels, etc . who now have subdued signage in keeping with
a scenic byway to follow suit and on what basis will their requests be
rejected? Or if granted, of what worth is the scenic byway
designation if it is to have its beauty disrupted by large billboards?
The Boars Head Inn is a wonderful attraction for Albemarle County, and
the Inn itself benefits from its locaton on a road granted the status
of a scenic byway by preserving its beauty as well as its value. We
maintain , however , that it is more than adequately advertised by its
present signage , a signage in harmony with a scenic byway as well as
the residences nearby. In addition , the Inn's location is clearly
announced with markers already present on I-64, Route 29 as well as
those on Route 250 . In the best interests of Albemarle County and its
residents, we urge you to reject this variance .

Gentlemen:
We hope you will help the University preserve its Jeffersonian heritage by
denying its request for a variance to tripple the size of the sign at the
entrance to the Boar's Head Inn.
Such a large billboard would violate the scenic highway designation for
Route 250 and reduce property values in Ednam Forest.
The present sign has been there for about 25 years. For the last 20 years,
we have told many friends and guests how to find our house by telling them
to "Turn at the Boar's Head Inn sign." All of them have found it. We fail to
see any compelling reason for the requested variance since the current sign
is clearly visible from both directions. Other comparable inns and hotels
in Virginia, such as the Homestead and the Williamsburg Inn, have much
smaller signs than the present Boar's Head sign.
Your denial of the variance in sign size would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking for 33 residents of Ednam Village, we would
like to oppose the request of Boar' s Head Enterprises to
increase the size of the entrance sign on 250 West from
18 square feet to 64 square feet.
Our members feel the present sign is adequate and we
believe even this size sign would not be permitted under
the "Scenic Highway" designation of route 250 at this
location.
