Hi Mariah,
My name is Lindsey Gelfand, I call Charlottesville home and am blessed with the honor of being a
mother to three beautiful young boys. My oldest son has Down syndrome and is also medically
complex. Because of the complexity of his many diagnoses (developmental disability, heart & lung
condition and behavioral issues) for his safety, we are unable to travel far from home. We count
ourselves lucky that we have a supportive family and many more resources than other families in our
situation. However, it is still an extremely challenging and isolating road. We have missed too many
family vacations, friendship gatherings, birthday parties to count. I can't even remember the last time
my husband and I were able to get away together. When Bettina first told me about her vision for the
Farm, I cried. The thought of having a place close-by where we could go to escape and recharge, but
also keep our son safe by having him near the Hospital and his team was a dream that I hadn't even
thought possible. I sincerely hope that you see the value that this brings to children, families, and
ultimately the community. It is much easier to pour from a full cup, than from one that is empty.
If you have any additional questions about how the Farm Retreat will benefit a family like mine, and the
community, please do not hesitate to reach out:
