Trenching - Do all trenching through whatever substances encountered , to the limits indicated or specified , and including that required for sanitary sewers and water mains and incidental pipeline work of the project. R CERTIFICATE No. A 00234 ry 4 A a 1 E Such rock shall be excavated to a minimum depth of six (6) inches below the required elevation and backfilled with suitable material to the elevation required to provide a foundation for laying the pipe. 2. 3. Trench widths shall be six (6) inches minimum and eight (8) inches maximum on each side of pipe bells . Trenches shall be accurately graded, and where excavations are made overdepth because of rock, unsuitable material, or other reasons , �I it shall be brought to grade with Type I , Grade C aggregate (Va. Dept. of Hwys . Road and Bridge Specifications) . 2. 4 . Trench bottoms shall be rounded by hand excavations so that at least the bottom quadrant of pipes shall rest on undisturbed earth for not less than 75% of the barrel length. Bell holes shall be dug out , by hand after the trench bottom has been prepared to receive the pipe . Bell holes shall be only of such size and shape as required to accommodate the joint and permit proper joining of the pipe. 1 2. 5. Not more than 200 ft. of trench shall be opened in advance of pipe laying except upon specific approval by the Engineer. Where pipes lie under fill , the trench excavation shall be made only after the compacted fill is in place . 2. 6 . Trenching shall be done in a manner to prevent the flow of surface water into excavations , and water accumulated therein shall be removed by pumping or other means approved by the Engineer. Sheeting, shoring, and bracing shall be provided or required for protection of the work, workmen, public, and surroundings . 2. 7 . Any blasting which may be required shall be done in accordance with the requirements of applicable laws and regulations by skilled operations . Three days notice shall be given Owner prior to any blasting. All blasting shall be accomplished with low yield shots with ample protection.. The Owner shall be notified prior to any blasting, but the Owner will accept no responsibility for protection to any property which may be damaged as a result of blasting. The Contractor will be solely responsible for damage resulting from blasting operations . • • • 2. 8. Backfilled excavations shall be filled to excess elevations above the finished grade to allow for shrinkage and settlement, except under areas to be paved which shall be backfilled as speci- fied above. Pipe, Fittings , Joints — All water pipe shall be Ten ( 10) inches , as shown in the plans , and good for 150 psi. working pressure . The pipe shall be ductile iron conforming to AWWA C151- 76 , ANSI A21. 51-1977 , equal to Glamorgan Class 50 . 4. 2. Joints for water pipe shall be slip or push-type joints . 4, 3 . Fittings for underground water pipe shall be cast iron, mechanical joint, good for 160 psi. working pressure , and conforming to ASA A21. 11. 4. 4. All ductile iron water pipe shall be cement-lined in conformance with ASA A21 . 4, except that the lining shall be half-thickness , commonly referred to as "Enameling. " 4. 5 . All dcast in conformance fittings ASAshall 4be cement- line 4. 6 . Pipe which is two (2) inches and under may be Schedule 40 steel pipe . 4. 7 . All stubouts for meter connections shall be two (2 ) inch, Type K copper tubing. 5 . LAYING PIPE 5 . 1. All water pipe, fittings , valves , and hydrants shall be handled carefully to avoid damage , and while suspended over the trench before lowering, they shall be inspected for defects . Cast iron pipe and fittings shall be rung with a light hammer to detect cracks . Before pipe is laid, all foreign matter shall be removed from the inside and ends shall be cleaned inside and outside. • III •5 . 2. Water shall not be allowed in the trench while pipe is being laid, and care shall be taken to tl prevent the entrance of foreign matter into the pipe line. As stipulated in Section 12 . 11 of the Waterworks Regulations , prior to placing a distribution main into service, at least two successive satisfactory bacteriological samples , taken on 24-hour intervals , must have been obtained. 9. 6. Owner and Engineer shall be notified three days in advance of sterilization operations . 3. SANITARY SEWER PIPELINE 10 . 1. Sewer Pipe, Fittings , and Joints — All sanitary - , sewer pipe and fittings shall be Type I , Schedule , 40 , eight (8) inch PVC pipe conforming to ASTM Spec. 1785 . All joints are to be slip or push type . Solvent welded eight (8) inch joints are prohibited. 1 10. 2 . Laying Pipe — All sewers shall be laid true to line and grade with bells upgrade . Pipe sections shall be so laid and fitted that, when complete, the sewer shall have a smooth and uniform invert. The pipe shall be kept clean, and each length shall be inspected for defects before being placed in the trench. Water shall not be allowed in the trench while pipe is being laid. Exposed ends of pipes shall be fully protected with an approved stopper . The interior of the pipelines shall be free of foreign matter as the work progresses , and pipelines shall be flushed clean upon completion of laying and jointing. Adequate backfill shall be placed on the pipe to prevent floatation.
