Subject: Shed complaint
Bart:
Thanks for your help thus far in clarifying zoning issues. Please just hit
reply so I can confirm you received this and I have the correct email.
Please find attached a letter regarding the shed for which you received a
complaint. As I mentioned to you and per the letter, it was never intended
to be permanent, but I am struggling with how to best store equipment on my
property in an attractive and safe manner.
I am not going to make the shed part of current variance application. My
current plan is to take the shed out anyway after project, but more
importantly, I am afraid my neighbor is going to fight me on the variance
permit for my house regardless of merit. I don't want to complicate or
personalize the issues more than they already seem to be.
Kind regards, Charles

Mr. Bart Svoboda
County of Albemarle

Dear Mr. Svoboda:
Please find below my explanation on the shed for which you received a complaint.
The shed is temporary and is intended to house tools and equipment during the current
construction project which has our family living in Roanoke with my parents. I ordered the shed after
already suffering the theft of a chainsaw, weed-eater, and various tools. I am happy to move the shed
after the project ends.
I would like to meet with you at my property to show you the shed and my property which is
100% flooplain and highly visible from the road. There are several issues I would like to discuss:
• The shed which received the complaint is over 10 feet off the property line. (in trying to
be a good neighbor, I discussed the placement of the shed with Mr. Cutright and he said it
would not bother him at all and that he thought what I was doing made sense. At that time
I was unaware of issues he has with our property and his other neighbors.)
• Equipment storage issues — longer term — how to handle? I can enclose a historic, adge-
hewn outbuilding, but it would mar the character and history of the structure. I am not
convinced I need a locked structure for tools, but given the recent theft, I am thinking
about how to handle.
• Trailers, tractor, gas cans, etc being stored in open beside road. Want to devise storage
solutions that are attractive to our property and neighbors.
• Locking shed which was removed during driveway project.
I would like to state that I feel I am being harassed by my neighbor and, even this weekend, had
him driving back in forth along my property in a manner I believe was meant to intimidate me — it
certainly does my wife and baby girl. Although he has a grudge against my property (for which I am
happy to discuss the reasons), I would prefer to de-personalize the issues and just follow the regulations.
I fully recognize my duty to follow the Albemarle Code which I support, but I am very concerned about
Mr. Cutright's actions toward me, beyond his calls to the County. He has made me nervous and recent
statements of other neighbors about his actions towards me has made me more so.
I will look forward to meeting you in person at your convenience.
Sincerely,
Charles Lunsford
