You have five (5) rooms in the main house, one (1) room in the cottage structure, and one (1) room in the carriage house which make up the seven (7) approved rooms under condition number one of the Special Permit. Prior to any use of the cottage (Building Permit #88-942) and the carriage house (Building Permit #87-1150) , a Certificate of Occupancy should be secured for these two (2) units. If the swimming pool (Building Permit #88-943) will be available to guests then the permit should indicate such, and represent such on the Certificate of Occupancy to be issued. I am with the understanding that the Albemarle Health Department has approved the required systems necessary to accommodate the additional facilities. Approval (temporary) has been given by the Health Department for a schedule of six (catered) events to take place in the remaining months of 1988, and I also approved the schedule (copy enclosed) . f7OP-S--59 A C-0Ait W11 O&M ----- --? According to all files I have access to, site plan approval has not been obtained. You should immediately contact the County Planning Department to pursue the required approval. Certificate of Occupancies for the carriage house and cottage will not be issued until the site plan and the accompanying approvals are obtained. In the future as warranted, the start up of the restaurant will require approvals through Zoning, Building and Fire Officials, and the local Health Department. Please forward a copy of your recent approval of "Clifton" as an Historic Landmark, so that our files will reflect such. I ask for your courtesy and prompt attention in regard to the immediate matter regarding the site plan. Please contact me if I may be of further assistance or answer any questions. Sincerely, AgLk. Mitchell Willey c/o Oppenheimer Wolff and Donnelly 1020 Nineteenth Street, NW Suite 400 Washington, DC 20036 RE: CLIFTON, Albemarle County Dear Mr. Willey: On behalf of the Commonwealth, it gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Virginia Historic Landmarks Board has placed Clifton on the Virginia Landmarks Register and has endorsed its being nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. We will be forwarding the nomination to the National Park Service within sixty days. The Virginia Landmarks Register was established by an act of the General Assembly in 1966 and includes "the buildings, structures, and sites which are of statewide or national significance." It is our judgment that Clifton richly deserves this official recognition as one of the Commonwealth's historic resources. The National Register of Historic Places is maintained by the National Park Service of the Department of the Interior. I am hopeful that the Keeper of the National Register will approve our nomination and place this property on this official list of the nation's historic places. The protection of registered Virginia landmarks is of immediate concern to this office. It is our hope that you will let us know if we can be of any assistance in the preservation of this property. Many times our staff can offer advice to owners who contemplate alterations or renovations of their properties, and we welcome the opportunity to erve. Sin y, • H. Bry Mitc ell T.
