A PROFESSIONAL CORPORATION Serving Virginia Since i966 November 8, 2022 Mr. Frank Pohl, County Engineer Albemarle County Community Development 401 McIntire Road Charlottesville, VA 22902 RE: WP0201600077 Luxor Amendment - Pond #3 Aquatic Bench Vegetation Dear Mr. Pohl, The original planting plan for Pond #3 specified four species for the aquatic bench: Iris pseudacorus (Yellow Flag Iris), Iris virginica (Virginia Blue Flag), Nuphar lutem (Spadderdock) and Scirpus validus (Soft -stem Bulrush). The plantings specified in that plan were never installed. The vegetation that exists now on the aquatic bench has established itself over time after the pond was constructed in 2016. 1 have surveyed the existing vegetation present on the aquatic bench of Pond #3 of the Luxor & North Pantops Commercial on Friday, November 4, 2022. There is a thick healthy community of perennial vegetation consisting of two main species - Typha latifolia (Common Cattail) and Iris virginica (Virginia Blue Iris). I also identified the following amongst the dominant plant species: Lemna Minor (Common Duckweed), Scirpus validus (Soft -stem Bulrush), Juncus effusus (Soft Rush), Persicaria hydropiper (Marsh Waterpepper) and Carex vulpinoidea (Fox Sedge). If the intent of replanting the aquatic bench is to follow the original plan, two species from the original planting plan are already in existence on the aquatic bench: Iris virginica (Virginia Blue Flag) and Scirpus validus (Soft -stem Bulrush). Additionally, the Iris pseudacorus would not and could not be planted today as it is considered a highly invasive species according to the Virgina DCR. It is my opinion that the removal of this existing plant community would be overly disruptive. If the existing plant community was removed to replant the aquatic bench, it could be years before the replacement plantings are at a comparable size and density of the plant community that is there now. Additionally, the action of removing the existing plantings would resuspend the sediment that the roots of the plants are holding in place. Sincerely, Avu.mU cteorge, piA 999 Second Street SE.
