Section 500.5 and 500.6 of the NEC lists combustible dust in the air under normal operating conditions as a Class 11, Division 1, Group G (for wood) location in regards to the electrical hazard. Section 500.7 lists 12 options for providing acceptable means to prevent combustion of the dusts. I would recommend that you hire a qualified electrician to review your existing conditions and provide a plan to comply with the commercial codes. The Virginia Mechanical Code also would regulate the installation and use of any dust collection systems. A building permit would be needed to upgrade the electrical, install any dust collection systems and change the use of the existing building from a private use garage to a factory (F) use, that is the code jargon. Once a permit is issued, the Building Inspection Department can approve our part of the Home Occupancy permit with Zoning. Please reach out with any questions. Are the codes for a business structure that are different than codes for a residential structure? We had a home inspection in Sep 2021 prior to moving and nothing was found during that. Please let me know next steps and I will be happy to help how I can. Is this shop for making furniture, etc for business purposes? Or is the shop just for personal use? There are building code requirements regarding the electrical in any shop the does woodworking that will need a building permit prior to issuing the Home Occ permit. Please advise.
