Re: Feasibility Study for Septic Areas
New Daycare Facility
Millstone of Ivy
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Willis:
As requested we have completed a soils study at the referenced site. The purpose of
the study was to determine the suitability of the soils for the disposal of sewage by
means of a septic tank drainfield system. The investigation has consisted of drilling a
series of ten (10) hand auger test holes to determine soil profiles in two (2) areas on
the property that could serve as the primary and 100% reserve drainfield sites for the
proposed facility. A log of each test hole is shown on the enclosed soil profile sheet.
The approximate location of the soil profile holes is shown on the enclosed site plan
prepared by Susan Riddle, P.E.. Also enclosed is a soil information summary sheet for
each area containing information pertinent to the design of a proposed drainfield.
We understand that a 3062 square foot building is planned for the site. The maximum
number of students is 50 and the maximum number of employees is 8.
Based on our investigation, it is our opinion that the soils in the vicinity of holes 1-10
are suitable for installation of drainfield lines under the current Health Department
regulations. If the drainfield lines are placed approximately 54 inches below the
existing ground surface an estimated percolation rate of 40 minutes/inch could be
used in sizing the drainfield. Using Table 5.4 of the Sewage Handling and Disposal
Regulations, approximately 209 square feet of trench area will be required for each
100 gallons of water used per day. Our opinion is based on soil and topographic
conditions as observed on February 28, 2001.
It should be noted that any grading in the proposed drainfield site could eliminate or
reduce the area available so the effect of any proposed cut or fill in the septic area
should be assessed.
The contents of this report reflect our opinion as to the suitability of the soils in the
areas investigated to support a septic tank/drainfield system under the current Health
Department regulations. Final approval and design of the drainfield rests with the
Charlottesville-Albemarle Health Department.
We hope this is'the information you need. If you have any questions, please let us
know.
Sincerely,
Gooch Engineering and Testing, Inc.
