At their meeting on July 8, 2008, the Board of Zoning Appeals voted 4-0 to defer your
variance application 2008-007 to September 9, 2008. Please make the revisions
requested by the Architectural Review Board and incorporate the Board of Zoning
Appeals' comments. If this cannot be done by August 13th, please let us know so we
can defer the variance to a later date.

Dear Mr. Smith:
The Albemarle County Architectural Review Board reviewed the above noted item at its
meeting on Monday, July 7, 2008. The Board, by a vote of 3:0, unanimously approved
the request, pending staff administrative approval of the following conditions and a work
session with the ARB to discuss the height of the sign and the design of the reader
board:
1. Revise the sign drawings by removing the reader board from the proposal or
providing a reader board design that does not have a temporary appearance and is
completely coordinated with the overall sign, including but not limited to colors,
architectural detail and method of attachment. The reader board design shall be
reviewed by the ARB in a work session.
2. Revise the sign location to the island at the east side of the entrance to the site,
avoiding easements and meeting setbacks.
3. Revise the sign drawings by reducing the overall height of the monument structure to
8'. If 10' or 12' is preferred, provide a mock-up on site for the ARB to review, to be
discussed at a work session.
4. Revise the sign drawings by showing the top of the sign panel located below the
brick soldier course at the top of the monument.
5. Brick sample submitted is approved. Revise the design of the structure with all signs
shown recessed within the structure.
6. The background of the sign panels shall be opaque. The logo and letters may
illuminate. External illumination is permitted. Provide cut sheets of the proposed
lights. All lighting emitting 3,000 lumens or more shall be a full cutoff style fixture. If
internal illumination of the sign panel (with logo), and reader board is approved,
revise the drawings to indicate that the backgrounds of both will be opaque.
7. Revise the site plan drawing to show the dimensioned location of the sign structure,
clearly indicating that it meets the 5' minimum setback requirement.
8. Provide a site plan showing the location of the proposed sign, and base plantings
consistent with the existing condition.
9. Revise the sign drawings to show all design changes.
Please contact me so we can schedule the work session and on-site sign mock up. Also,
please provide:
1. Two full sets of revised drawings addressing each of these conditions. Include
updated ARB revision dates on each drawing and an ARB approval signature
panel.
2. A memo including detailed responses indicating how each condition has been
satisfied. If changes other than those requested have been made, identify those
changes in the memo also. Highlighting the changes in the drawing with
"clouding" or by other means will facilitate review and approval.
3. The attached "Revised Application Submittal" form. This form must be returned
with your revisions to ensure proper tracking and distribution.
When staffs review of this information indicates that all conditions of approval have been
met, a Certificate of Appropriateness may be issued.
