SITE/PROJECT HISTORY
The Architectural Review Board has not reviewed any previous proposals for this parcel. This
building permit request does not involve any additional site plan requirements; therefore, the
review /approval of a site plan amendment by Current Development is not required.
May 5, 2007: ARB 2008 -54, Augusta Cooperative Farm, Presented as an Other Business item to the
ARB with the request from staff for a determination concerning whether or not this proposal could be
handled administratively. It was the consensus of the ARB that:
o The applicant needs to provide additional information for review by the ARB showing the
canopy on the building.
o The southern leg of the brick building should be treated as part of the white building.
o A white metal roof is not appropriate. A dark gray roof to match the existing shingle color
should be used.
These comments were provided to the applicant to assist in providing the additional information
required to complete this review. Staff has spoken with the applicant twice in an effort to clarify
exactly what additional information is needed and a suitable format for its presentation.
CONTEXT
The Augusta Cooperative Farm Bureau is located on the northeast side of Route 20 South, 1,100' north of the
intersection with State Route 726, James River Road. The surrounding area is rural in character with open
agricultural fields, mixed hardwood forest and single family homes.
PROJECT DETAILSNISIBILITY
The applicant is proposing to install a canopy structure across the front facade of the existing white garage
building. This area is currently used for display, and the canopy would provide the additional protection from

the elements desired by the applicant. The building is located approximately 70' northeast of, and roughly at
grade with, the EC. The existing building and proposed canopy will be clearly visible from the Route 20S EC.
ANALYSIS based on:
• Canopy cross - section sketch, Augusta Cooperative Farm Bureau Scottsville, received 4/21/08.
• Canopy elevation sketch, Augusta Cooperative Farm Bureau Scottsville, received 4/21/08.
• Photograph (photo /drawing) of the existing building with proposed improvements superimposed,
received 5/16/08.
• Photographs of the existing site.
Issue: Proposed Canopy Structure/Materials /Construction
Comments: The canopy structure is to measure 12' deep and 27' long. The front of the canopy is to be
supported by 3 equally spaced 6 x 6 posts, while the rear of the canopy will attach to the existing fagade by
way of a board or beam that is to be installed directly above the 2 garage doors. There is adequate space (6" to
8 ") between the top of the garage door and the bottom of the wall sign for the canopy to attach to the building.
The slope of the proposed canopy is to match that of the existing roof on the adjoining brick building, avoiding
any conflicts where the two will adjoin.
Recommendations: None.
Issue: Proposed Canopy Structure/Colors
Comments: The applicant has verbally indicated that the canopy roof is to be a prefinished metal in a dark
shade of grey to match the color of the canopy in the photo /drawing provided on 5/16/08. A sample of the roof
material and color was not included with this submission. The gray canopy color, as represented on the
photo /drawing, appears to be an appropriate shade of gray for the proposal.
Recommendations: Provide a sample of the metal roof material with the proposed color. The proposed color
should match the gray canopy roof color, as represented in the photo /drawing, provided with this submission.
Issue: Lighting
Comments: The applicant has verbally indicated that additional exterior lighting is not part of this proposal.
The applicant should be aware that additional exterior lighting would require review and approval by the ARB.
All proposed lighting exceeding the 3,000 lumens threshold shall meet full cutoff requirements.
Recommendations: None.
Issue: Existing Building Signage
Comments: The applicant has verbally indicated that the existing building signage AUGUSTA CO -OP FARM
BUREAU Inc is to remain as is. As previously mentioned, the applicant has indicated that there is sufficient
room (6" — 8 ") between the top of the garage door and the bottom of the sign to accommodate the metal
canopy.
Recommendations: None.
