RE: ARB- 2003 -64: Harris Teeter and Blue Ridge Shopping Center
Tax Map 56, Parcel 110
Dear Mr. Schank:
The Albemarle County Architectural Review Board, at its meeting on April 21, 2008, held a work session
on ARB- 2003 -64: Harris Teeter and Blue Ridge Shopping Center. It was the consensus of the ARB that
the applicant must address all the items listed in the staff reports as well as the notes placed on the
drawing by Ms. Smith, as follows:
1. Identify the scale of the drawing on the drawing.
2. Add to the drawing a materials list identifying all the approved materials and colors.
3. Identify the pilasters as brick.
4. On the Front (west) Elevation, identify the inset panels as "brick headers, typ. ".
5. Revise the Rear (east) Elevation, from the north end to the loading area, to be faced with brick.
Continue the brick cornice detailing across this brick wall.
6. Extend the screen wall on the Rear (east) Elevation as far as possible and raise its height to the
next higher brick band.
7. Clarify on the drawing that the screen wall on the Rear (east) Elevation is faced with brick.
8. In the north bay of the Rear (east) Elevation, identify the bands as brick soldier courses.
9. Eliminate the central pilaster from the bay at the left end of the Left Elevation. Eliminate the
banding at the pilaster below the cornice. See the July 5, 2007 elevations for reference.
10. On the Left Elevation, move the sign down for a more coordinated appearance.
11. Revise the detailing at the tops of the windows on the Left Elevation to a double- height soldier
course.
12. On the Rear Elevation, provide double- height soldier courses above the windows and single
courses below.
13. On the Rear Elevation, add pilasters to the ends of the end bay (right end).
14. Sign shall not obscure architectural detailing.
15. Indicate on the drawing that the background of the box sign is opaque. Provide details on the
proposed graphic /logo.
Following the meeting, you submitted a revised elevation Sheet A2.1 (issue date 2/8/08 with no revision
date) and corresponding site plan amendment sheet SP2 with revision date of 14 April 2008. The
elevation drawing addresses all outstanding conditions of ARB approval, except #15, above. A sign permit
and a separate ARB application are required for the wall signs illustrated on the elevation drawings. The
wall signs illustrated on the elevation drawings are not approved at this time.
You may consider this letter your Certificate of Appropriateness for the proposed changes, except the
signage. This approval is predicated on the fact that the design and materials, as proposed and exhibited
for review, will be used. The acceptance of approval implies that the applicant has agreed to execute the
design as indicated on the site plan, attachments, materials, samples, and other submittal items
presented. Any change in the approved design or materials will require an amendment to the plan and
must be reviewed and approved by the Architectural Review Board.
Please note that changes made to the site or architectural plans after issuance of a Certificate of
Appropriateness can delay the signing of mylars and the approval of building permits. It is in the
applicant's best interest to notify ARB staff of such changes and to initiate the review of amendments to
ARB- approved plans to avoid future delays.
If you have any questions concerning any of the above, please feel free to call me
Sincerely,
Margaret Maliszewski
Principal Planner
