Amy Pflaum,
We have reviewed the above plans and have the following comments:
Geometries
• The plans show that the driveways are proposed to be 10 ft wide. Appendix B of the VDOT Road
Design Manual requires that private driveway entrances be at least 12 ft wide.
• The radius of the driveway entrances are not indicated on the plans. Appendix B requires that a
driveway entrance have radius of at least 2 ft.
• The radius of the curb at the intersection of Killdeer Lane and Summerford Lane should be 25' not 22'.
• It appears that Killdeer Lane has a landing of 40 ft instead of 50 ft.
• The proposed centerline radii of Killdeer Lane need to be shown. Since the radius of the curb on the
left side of the southbound lane on Killdeer Lane is only 31.5 ft, the centerline radius of the southbound
lane is less than the minimum of 110 ft required for a design speed of 20 mph. The horizontal
alignment needs to be changed to meet this requirement.
• The street design table on sheet S -4 states that, for a design speed of 20 mph, the minimum K- values for
crests and sags are 12 and 26 respectively. According to AASHTO's A Policy on Geometric Design of
Highways and Streets, the minimum K values for a design speed of 20 mph for crests and sags are 7
and 17.
Drainage
• The spread at the curb of structure 4 is 10.50 ft. According to chapter 9 of the VDOT Drainage
Manual, the maximum allowable spread is 1/2 lane width + gutter width which equals 8 ft.
If you have any questions, please contact Joel DeNunzio or me.
