SITE/PROJECT HISTORY
• The current application is for the installation of an existing wall sign (Attachment B) and an
existing panel in a multi- tenant freestanding sign (Attachment C) that were installed without ARB
review /approval and without a sign permit. The signage is for a business located in the building at
1807 Seminole Trail.
• October 6, 2003: ARB 2003 -124, The Artful Lodger, Certificate of Appropriateness for a Sign,
approval. This approval included a refaced tenant panel with black text on a white background, to
be located on the freestanding sign at the site entrance.
• May 20, 2002: ARB 2004 -140, Nextel Sign, Comprehensive Sign Review and Certificate of
Appropriateness for a Sign, approval (Attachment A). The Board determined that future signs for
the building shall meet the following conditions.
1. Signs shall consist of illuminated channel letters.
2. Faces shall be white with raspberry vinyl overlay (PMS 202).
3. Trim cap and return color to be bronze.
4. Raceway to match building (PMS 423C).
The approved letter height for the Nextel Sign was 36 ". This approval also included a refaced
tenant panel with black text on a white background, to be located on the freestanding sign at the
site entrance.
CONTEXT
The surrounding area is characterized by dense commercial, strip developments facing the Route 29
Entrance Corridor. The building has wall signs located within the second floor sign band, facing the EC,
ARB 8/18/08 Stellar One Sign- Page - 1
above the horizontal row of windows. Unlike the sign under review, the other existing wall signs in the
sign band are white with a raspberry vinyl overlay (PMS 202), internally illuminated, and in compliance
with the Comprehensive Sign Review Guidelines established for 1807 Seminole Trail.
VISIBILITY
The existing wall sign under review is located on the front (west) elevation facing the Entrance Corridor.
It is highly visible from the EC. The existing tenant panel in the multi- tenant freestanding sign is located
on the north side of the site entrance, and is also highly visible from the Route 29N EC.

ANALYSIS (based on 2 sign drawings received June 30, 2008)
Issue: Comprehensive Sign Review/Wall Sign
Comments: The Stellar One wall sign consists of 3' tall, internally illuminated, channel letters located in
the sign band across the top of the front (west) elevation, facing the Route 29 Entrance Corridor. The sign
is highly visible. Sign colors consist of blue (Stellar) and gold (One) faces with white returns, on a
raceway painted to match PMS 443U. The established Comprehensive Sign Guidelines for this building
require white channel letters with raspberry vinyl overlay (PMS 202), bronze trim caps and returns, on a
raceway painted to match PMS 423C. The sign type, size, and font meet the Comprehensive Sign
Guidelines and have a coordinated appearance with the other existing wall signs on this fagade. The sign
colors, however, do not observe the established guidelines and stand in sharp contrast with the other 2
existing wall signs, Country Wide Home Loans, and Sprint, which do observe the guidelines. The blue
and gold faces are overly intense colors that clash with the building and the existing signage. Blue and
gold are trademark colors for the bank; however, Entrance Corridor Guidelines indicate that the ARB may
ARB 8/18/08 Stellar One Sign- Page - 2
require that trademark colors be modified. The sign raceway color (PMS 443U) does not match the
building and is not the PMS 423C color approved for raceways on this fagade. The sign drawings indicate
that the internal illumination will be provided by white permlite LED lighting. It is ARB policy to only
approve LED lighting where the level of illumination produced by the LED lights will not exceed the
illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
Recommendations: Revise the sign and the wall sign drawing to indicate the channel letter face color will
be raspberry vinyl overlay (PMS 202), the trim caps and returns will bronze, the raceway will be painted
PMS 423C to match the building, and the level of illumination produced by the LED lights will not
exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
Issue: Multi- Tenant Freestanding Sign/Colors /Coordination
Comments: There is an existing externally illuminated, multi- tenant freestanding sign located on the north
side of the site entrance. The Stellar One sign is a 2' high by 10' -8" long aluminum tenant panel that is
mounted on the existing structure. The panel background is blue with a gold border, and the text is white
(Stellar) and gold (One). Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines state that sign colors should compliment and
support the building being served by the sign. Sign colors should be harmonious with each other and the
other elements on the site. The sign colors do not coordinate with the raspberry vinyl required for the
building wall signs, and they stand in sharp contrast with the existing tenant panels with black, gray, and
white colors.
Recommendations: Revise the tenant panel sign and sign drawing to indicate the text color will be
raspberry (PMS 202), and the background color will be a gray color (to match the 1807 SEMINOLE
TRAIL sign panel located above) with a white border.
SUMMARY OF REVIEW
The existing sign colors for the wall sign and tenant panel sign do not observe Comprehensive Sign
Guidelines that were established for this multi- tenant building. As a result, the colors do not coordinate
and compliment the building and the other existing signs.
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends the following as the primary points of discussion:
1. The proposed colors of both signs.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends approval of a Certificate of Appropriateness for the Stellar One signs, pending staff
administrative approval of the following conditions:
1. Revise the sign and the wall sign drawing to indicate the channel letter face color will be raspberry
vinyl overlay (PMS 202), the trim caps and returns will bronze, the raceway will be painted PMS
423C to match the building, and the level of illumination produced by the LED lights will not exceed
the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
2. Revise the tenant panel sign and sign drawing to indicate the text color will be raspberry (PMS 202),
and the background color will be a gray color (to match the 1807 SEMINOLE TRAIL sign panel
located above) with a white border.
