Dear Mr. Sanders:
The Albemarle County Architectural Review Board, at its meeting on January 5, 2009, completed a preliminary
review of the above -noted request to construct a one -story 2,352 square foot church building with sanctuary
occupancy of 72, an entrance drive, gravel parking, and associated site work. The Board offered the following
comments for the benefit of the applicant's next submittal. Please note that the following comments are those
that have been identified at this time. Additional comments may be added or eliminated based on further
review and changes to the plan.
1. Site sections would be useful to further clarify the level of visibility. Submit site sections traversing
the structure and site from the east, northeast, and north corners of where the parcel meets the
EC. Show tree protection fencing on the plan and provide a conservation checklist.
2. Revise the drawings to clarify the exterior access to the door on the north elevation. Revise the
north elevation drawing to add a lancet window to the left of the door.
3. Revise the site plan to show a planting scheme that is more integrated with the surrounding natural
landscape to screen the HVAC unit. Include plantings taller than 24" at the initial time of planting in
the revised scheme.
4. Submit a detailed drawing of the cupola design that addresses any proposed lighting, the materials
and colors to be used for the cupola and cross, and whether the cupola is enclosed or consists of
an open frame. Reduce the height of the cupola to make it more in proportion with the overall
church.
5. Submit material and color samples for the proposed roof shingle, and color samples for the
proposed cement fiber siding, trim, and cross.
6. Indicate that no lighting is proposed for the building or site. Or, if lighting is proposed, submit a
photometric plan, cut sheets of proposed light fixtures to be used on the building and /or site, and all
related details.
7. Submit detailed drawings of the proposed sign addressing all ARB sign checklist requirements,
including overall design and size, lettering, color, manner of illumination, and landscaping around
the base of the sign. Submit color and material samples.
8. Regarding the potential need /requirement for additional parking spaces, add a note and dashed
outline to the plan identifying the area of potential future parking expansion.
9. Clarify with a tree inventory the quantity and species of trees on site (6" caliper or greater) within the
area marked in red on the plan dated 1/5/09, noting those that are to remain. Provide additional
comprehensive photos of the site (into the site and out from the site) to illustrate the character and
extent of the existing wooded area.
10. Provide a copy of the approved parking study.

checklists and schedules are available on -line at www.albemarle.org /planning.
Revised drawings addressing the comments listed above are required. Include updated ARB revision dates on
each drawing and an ARB approval signature panel. Please provide a memo including detailed responses
indicating how each comment has been addressed. If changes other than those requested have been made,
identify those changes in the memo also. Highlighting the changes in the drawing with "clouding" or by other
means will facilitate review and approval.
