SITE/PROJECT HISTORY
On April 6, 2009, staff presented ARB 2009 -26, PVC Sign as an Other Business item to the ARB with a
request for direction concerning the sign structure and design. It was the consensus of the ARB that: 1) a
brick base is recommended, 2) the number of colors is excessive, 3) the sign would be more clear and in
keeping with the guidelines if one logo was used and the companies were simply listed as text (not logos
for each one). On May 4, 2009, staff presented the revised sign design, using a tenant panel sign concept,
with a request for direction concerning the sign design. It was the consensus of the ARB that Design #2
could be approved with a maximum of three colors, including the color of the silver background. In their
discussion, the ARB indicated that the tenant panel concept, presented as the third design, was not
appropriate. The criterion for Design #2 is outlined in the Proposal section of this report. It is being
forwarded to the ARB due to the applicant's request for 4 colors including the silver background color.
LOCATION /CONTEXT
The proposed freestanding sign is to be located in the lawn area in front of the office building at 2815
Hydraulic Road, halfway between the front building entrance and the sidewalk at the right -of -way. This
section of the Hydraulic Road Entrance Corridor is densely developed with a mix of office, high density
residential, commercial, religious and public education facilities.
VISIBILITY
Due to its location approximately 15' from the right -of -way, the double -sided sign is expected to be
highly visible from the Hydraulic Road Entrance Corridor.

ANALYSIS (based on a revised sign drawing received 5/21/09, with a latest revision date of 2/24/09)
Issue: Sign Design/Number of Colors
Comments: At the May 4, 2009 meeting, it was the consensus of the ARB that the design as proposed
could be approved with a maximum of three colors, including the color of the silver background. While
Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines encourage the use of 3 or fewer colors, it should be noted that the
number of colors has been reduced from 8, in the original application, to 4 including the color of the
silver background. Because the gold PMS 1235C is only used in 3 locations as the underline graphic and
is expected to be barely discernible from the Corridor, its impact is expected to be negligible.
Recommendations: None.
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends the following as the primary points of discussion:
1. The number of proposed colors.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends approval of a Certificate of Appropriateness for the sign as currently proposed.
