SUBJECT: Luck Stone Shadwell sign
Lisa,
Thanks for dropping off the sign information. I appreciate you providing actual color samples and the various
photos. Some of what I've provided below is information we've already discussed, but I've included it here as a
summary and for reference.
The sign design represented in the Massaponax photo is the style that was approved by the ARB back in 1999. I
can sign off on that style now for the ARB based on that previous approval, although all features of the sign will
need to meet ordinance requirements (for example, there is a 24 sf maximum for signs in the rural areas), so
some revisions may be necessary. You can visit section 4.15 of the zoning ordinance for applicable sign
regulations. Also, Stewart Wright (3024) and Sherri Proctor (x3226) can help you with zoning - related sign
issues.
I would like you to note that the sign design approved by the ARB in 1999 would not likely be approved today.
The intense yellow and green colors and the over - scaled appearance of the letters in relation to the sign
background are the primary features that don't meet the Entrance Corridor guidelines. (The guidelines were
updated in 2004.) The sign illustrated in the Boscobel photo appears to be a better match to the current
guidelines. A sign of the Boscobel style, with careful proportioning, would be a positive feature in the Entrance
Corridor. I encourage you to consider using that style instead.
I understand that you've received preliminary site plan approval for your entrance and office building project.
When you submit your final site plan for review, it might be easiest for you to eliminate the sign drawing from
the site plan set. That will allow site plan review /approval to move forward without having to resolve the sign
design. (The sign wouldn't be approved with the site plan anyway, but the drawing I approve for the ARB needs
to be accurate.) The only other ARB issue for the entrance /office building site plan is the visibility /roof issue,
which you've noted that you're working on.
When you've decided on your final sign design and are ready to move forward with erecting the sign, you'll
need to submit a sign application accompanied by all the relevant checklist items. The ARB and Zoning sign
applications and submittal checklists have been combined into a single form. Try this link to access the
application/checklist: http : / /www.albemarle.org/deptforms. asp ?sectionid = &department= cdsigns
If you have questions about your proposed sign design or the application /review process, please feel free to
contact me.
