HomeMy WebLinkAboutSP200400007 Review Comments Home Occupation 2009-12-116itarr matters On Christmas Eve, Scott Burke decided to leave his position as Greenkeeper, here at Sea View to seek opportunities elsewhere. We are currently advertising for a replacement. Corey is currently enjoying a visit to Thailand and will return on 14th January just in time to help Owen prepare for the Summer Cup. We also bade farewell recently to David Pensabene, our Bar Manager, who decided not to renew his contract and to seek out further career opportunities. We welcome Teresa Buchanan to the role of Bar & Functions Supervisor. Teresa commenced duties on 27 December 2007. She has a varied background in hospitality roles and is very keen to re -invigorate the club -house. Over the coming months Teresa will be introducing various food lines and expanding what we have to offer. Please drop in and say hi and discuss any ideas you may like to see introduced. Hello to all Sea View Golf Club members. If I haven't met you yet my name is Teresa Buchanan the club's new Bar & Functions Supervisor. I have strong back ground in hospitality and especially enjoy the catering side of the industry. If you have any up and com- ing functions or any ideas for what you would like to see on both the functions and catering side of things please drop by the bar and see me with your ideas. Lets breathe some life back into your club. Teresa. Membership Drive The response to the membership drive conducted from late October has been very positive. The club must be proactive and introduce new blood at all times. On behalf of all at Sea View I welcome the new members to the club and invite exist- ing members to share a drink with new members. Fees Subscriptions for the coming year have been increased by just 4%. It is pleasing to report that over 50% of members have already paid their fees in full and a sig- nificant proportion have elected to pay by monthly direct debit. Your Board is committed to keep expen- diture to a minimum whilst maintaining a high level of member services. It is never an easy balance and all operations of the Club remain under scrutiny. Your con- structive feedback in this regard is always welcome. Competition Frizes The office is currently holding a number of prizes, match balls and vouchers. Please call in and see Fhil or Shareen to collectyourpnzes. Jfaeiam Ni,94( Friday 22nd February- 6pm Ticket $20.00 each Antipasto, Lasagne, Cannelloni, Salads and Desserts . Farewell It is with mixed feelings that we say "au revoir" to Graham "Shep" Shepherd who is departing our shore on January 28th to take up residence in Bali. Shep has been a long time staunch sup- porter of Sea View Golf Club and he will be sorely missed. I hope that you had a won- derful festive break and now ready to play more golf at the club. Last year was a significant year for the club. The closure of the road and restora- tion of the fairways with grass has made the place look like a proper golf course. I must thank the many members who worked so hard to ensure their vision has become a reality. The support from the Town of Cottesloe and WA Golf Club to ensure that the road was removed and the grass available for planting is greatly ap- preciated. To the small team of grounds staff and club volunteers led by our course superinten- dent Owen deserves special thanks. All we need now is the reticulation to be replaced. Board of Management Positions for 2008 Several members of your current Board of Man- agement have indicated that they will not be seeking re-election at the next AGM. The following positions constitute the Board: • President and Treasurer (from the 2007 AGM shall be elected for a term of two (2) years); • Vice President and Club Captain from the 2008 AGM shall be elected for a term of two (2) years and • all other positions for two (2) years or until their successors are elected. The positions of Vice President and Club Cap- tain will be declared vacant at the AGM and members need to nominate for these positions. Two casual vacancies have been created by res- ignations -Vice Captain and General Board Member. The Board will fill these positions as per the constitution. I would ask any members interested in filling these positions for the re- mainder of the initial term (1 year) to nominate no later than 19th February to the Managing Sec- retary. I would encourage you all to consider putting up your hand and making a commitment to join the Club's Board of Management. Your chance to influence the future of the Club will present itself with the Board elections at the AGM in March. Please give this matter your full consideration and do not hesitate to contact me or Phil in the office should you wish to discuss this further. Futures Review Group 2008 could be even more signifi cant than 2007. You my recall that towards the end of last year I called all members to a meeting to consider the future of Sea View Golf Club. The existence of the club was threatened. It was vital that the club review its current position and look to planning the future. This meeting discussed the issues and provided many suggestions and comments about the club. It also authorised the formation of a "Futures Review Group" consisting of Myself, Mr Peter Oates (Treasurer), Mr Trevor Gallagher (ordinary member), Mr Chris Ben- net (6 day member). This group was charged with the task of considering the suggestions of the meeting and to report to the Board and members a direction for the future. The group has met many times and considered a number of proposals from others and is now ready to present an options report to the Board for consideration. The Board will then decide on a course of action. My plans are for it to develop a recommendation that will then be presented to members at an information evening in early February, then a Special General Meeting in the middle of Feb- ruary to consider the recommendation and vote on the proposal. This meeting could be very significant for the members of Sea view Golf Club and I would urge all members to take a significant involvement in the discussions and decision making. The future of the club is in the hands of the members at these meetings and not the Board. 2008 Fees Due The Board has set a modest increase of 4% for the 2008 season. Given the rise in external costs incurred by the club, this must be seen as being very prudent. Management are working to tighten up on all areas of our operations, whist not compromising on the qual- ity that we present the course in. Invoices were issued in November and are now due and payable. As in previous years we are offering members three methods for the payment of fees. A benefit to the club is received by members pay- ing fees in full in January, and as in the past a small finance sur- charge is levied on the 2nd moiety if members opt to pay this way. Arrangements are also available for members to pay by monthly di- rect debit, again this method attracts a small monthly surcharge to cover administrative costs. The Capital Contribution charge of $200 towards the reticulation project is being placed in a quarantined bank account awaiting the final outcome of the DSR grant application. This decision is ex- pected in February. This season is one of financial consolidation and all members are urged to pay outstanding fees as soon as possible. If you are experi- encing financial difficulties please call the office and we will work with you to assist you. Captain"s Comment We now have the old road fully grassed in the fairway areas, the rough areas will be restored by natural growth of the couch grass and will be treated as GUR until such time as this occurs, The new I I'h tee is now in play and I have had a number of favourable reports, with no negatives to date. Your greens committee has undertaken a series of tree plantings behind the 6`h green and have endeavoured to establish an avenue of trees to delineate the old road. We were fortunate enough to have all of these trees donated and this will be recognized by the attachment of a small plaque on each tree indicating the name of the donor. We sincerely thank these members for their generosity. Saturday comp fields continue to give us a great deal of concern as they remain around 70 players, when we can comfortably ac- commodate at least 100 players. We cannot continue to reserve the course for this number of players and as such we would ap- preciate any constructive suggestions. .I for one have considered running a 9 hole comp with say two time slots in the AM and two time slots in the PM, to accommodate those members who are unable to give up 4 hours of their time on a Saturday but could perhaps spare 2 hours. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. In conjunction with our Professional we also will commence a Twilight Comp on a Thursday evening commencing on Thursday 24`" January and running for the balance of the Daylight saving period. The first official tee of time will be 4.00pm and the last will be at 6.00pm (followed by a Happy hour from 6 till 8.30pm). Bookings must be made with the Pro shop and those wishing to commence prior to 4.00pm will be accommodated subject to timesheet availability. Talking of timesheets, commencing ls` January 2008 any member, visitor or green fee player wishing to play on the course, at any time (outside normal competitions) will be required to book in with the Professional, who will run a daily timesheet. The purpose of this is twofold (1.) it will, we hope, eliminate members turning up to play and finding they are unable to do so be- cause there is a group booking or something similar using the course and ( 2.) it will give the management group a better under- standing of where our income is being generated from. This does not mean that if you normally come down everyday to play 4, or 18 holes you cannot still do so , you can, it just means you need to tell the Professional of your intent (in fact if you want to book in for say 3.00pm every day then just tell the Professional, by the same token if you do not plan to play you must let him know also). We are hopeful that this procedure will eliminate any complaints from members turning up and finding they are un- able to either play or tee of when they arrive. We must all express our gratitude to Owen Oberg, our Course Supervisor, who has been on his own since Christmas, following the resignation of one of his staff and our other staff member overseas on annual leave. If you see Owen around the course please show your appreciation. I would like also to thank those members who have volunteered to do various jobs around the course to assist at this time. They know who they are, unfortunately it seems to be the same old few, however many thanks again for all your help. Welcome to our new Bar & Functions Supervisor, Teresa who has already made a great difference to the bar. Please drop in and TRY her sandwiches ,they are to die for and I believe she has some other GOODIES planned for us. Weekly Competition Sponsor S Good golfing. John Robertson. Professional Damien has been a great asset to the club and it is great to see him on the golf course trying to better the course. The equipment at the shop is good value and I would encour- age everyone to support the Professional as we will only be able to keep his services if we provide him with the custom. Needed In past seasons the club has been fortunate that many members donate trophies/awards for the weekly events. Not only does this help financially but it does demonstrate strong club spirit. Once again we are seeking donors for the 2008 season. If you are able to assist please leave your details with Phil or Shareen in the office As a mark of respect to the donors if you have a good day see if you can make it back to the club around 5:30pm for the presentation. Its an opportunity for you to celebrate your good day as well as thank the donor for his gener- ous support to the club Sea View is very fortunate to have a number of people and businesses who support the club in various ways. Time Sheets As of 1/1/08, to better enable the club profes- sional to manage course usage, it is intended to introduce time sheets for non competition tee times. Members are encouraged to contact Damian, Simon or Ken to obtain a preferred tee time. By doing this members will be allocated preferred times and visitors can be accommo- dated also, thereby ensuring revenues for the club are maximised. Should you be unavailable to play at the time allocated, then please call the Pro Shop so that we can re -allocate the time to another member. This keeps all everyone happy. Friday's are getting very busy and bookings are essential to ensure a game at your preferred time. All members are reminded that guest's green fees must be paid to the pro shop before com- mencing play.
