Todd — I have reviewed your revised sign proposal. The following comments, from my email below of 12/30/09, will
need to be addressed before a Certificate of Appropriateness approval can be granted:
Revise the sign drawing to include the following note:
"Brick in sign structure to match brick in building"
The sign drawing currently indicates that the coping (meaning at the top of the structure) is to be metal. It does
not indicate what the material is for the white molding at the base of the sign. Revise the sign drawing to
indicate that the white molding at the base of the sign is to be metal as well.
• Provide a landscape plan showing the planting that would be used around the sign to incorporate it into the
overall landscape plan for the development. It may be that the existing planting addresses this issue; however, I
do not currently have any drawing to refer to.
Thanks and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.

Importance: High
Todd — I am sending this email as a follow up to our two phone conversations earlier today. You expressed an interest in
relocating the sign outside of the Service Authority's easement; however, you were concerned that it would require an
amendment to the approved site plan and therefore extend the time required in obtaining your approval. As I
mentioned, I spoke with Bill Fritz, Chief of Current Development, and he confirmed that it did not require such an
amendment. The revised location can be reviewed and approved by Sherri Proctor, Zoning Division, Senior Permit
Planner (296 -5832, ext. 3226, Email: sproctor @albemarle.org ) who is already handling the review of your sign permit
application.
As I noted this morning, your ARB application is currently scheduled for the January 19th ARB meeting if we were not
able to work this out administratively. From what you have told me, it sounds like we can work this out administratively;
however, I will need to have you respond to this email by Monday, January 4, 2010 requesting that the ARB application
be deferred to allow you the additional time needed to revise it; suggested wording for your email reply to me would be:
"I am writing to request a deferral of ARB 09 -107, River's Edge Sign, to allow the additional time needed to revise our
proposal."
Requesting this deferral then allows me to take your proposal off of the January 19th ARB meeting agenda. You will not
need to make another application; however, you will need to have Sherri Proctor approve your sign and its revised
location. Once that is done, you will send the revised proposal directly to me so that I can then pick up my ARB review
and work with you to get this taken care of.
As I noted earlier, the issues with the current proposal mainly have to do with the extensive use of the EPS material. The
ARB has given staff the ability to administratively approve such a sign structure if the EPS is limited to the sign panel
itself. Replacing the sign base with brick to match that used in the building and using a metal cornice should address
these issues; a sample of the EPS would need to be provided. I would also need a landscape plan showing the planting
that would be used around the sign to incorporate it into the overall landscape plan for the development.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions. I am here to assist in any way that I can.
Wishing you a Happy New Year,
Brent
