Upon submittal of the application, staff worked with the applicant to reduce the number of colors and
simplify the sign design. Staff suggested eliminating the blue color initially proposed in the pig graphic and
making all the text on the lower portion of the sign black. The applicant did eliminate the blue color, but
chose to keep alternating red and black colors for the text at the bottom of the sign.
Staff then asked the ARB for direction on this application as an Other Business Item. The ARB provided
the following comments:
For consistency in application of the EC sign guidelines, it was the consensus of the ARB that:
• The quantity of fonts used should be reducedlsimplified.
• The sign is too graphically dense. Additional white space is required.
• The number of colors used should be reduced. It is recommended that no more than 2 shades of

1. The proposed number of fonts and colors.
2. The sign content and composition.
Staff offers the following comments on the Certificate of Appropriateness for a Sign:
1. Reduce the number of graphic images, colors, and fonts to create a unified sign design that is visually compatible and consistent with other
signs along the EC in this area.
2. Reduce the number of fonts used in the sign. Consider eliminating the small text.
3. Simplify the color scheme and reduce the number of colors used in the sign design to four. No more than two shades of red, orange, or
yellow should be used.
4. Eliminate the "Charlottesville, VA" and BBQ description text.
