(See next page for details.) Context The parcel is located on the west side of Route 29, approximately 300' south of the Rio Road intersection. The area is characterized by intensive commercial development. A fast food restaurant is located to the south and a small scale shopping center is located to the north and across Route 29 North to the east. Visibility The existing building is located approximately 80' west of the Entrance Corridor and is highly visible to northbound and southbound traffic on Route 29. ARB Meeting Date September 7, 2010 Staff Contact Eryn Brennan PROJECT HISTORY DATE APPLICATION/ REVIEW TYPE RESULT 8/2/2010 ARB- 2010 -72 Upon submittal of the application, staff worked with the applicant to reduce the number of colors and simplify the sign design. Staff suggested eliminating the blue color initially proposed in the pig graphic and making all the text on the lower portion of the sign black. The applicant did eliminate the blue color, but chose to keep alternating red and black colors for the text at the bottom of the sign. Staff then asked the ARB for direction on this application as an Other Business Item. The ARB provided the following comments: For consistency in application of the EC sign guidelines, it was the consensus of the ARB that: • The quantity of fonts used should be reducedlsimplified. • The sign is too graphically dense. Reduce the number of graphic images, colors, and fonts to create a unified sign design that is visually compatible and consistent with other signs along the EC in this area. 2. Reduce the number of fonts used in the sign. Consider eliminating the small text. 3. Simplify the color scheme and reduce the number of colors used in the sign design to four. No more than two shades of red, orange, or yellow should be used. 4. Eliminate the "Charlottesville, VA" and BBQ description text.
