Subject: ARB 2010 -113, Giant Signs, Rivanna Ridge Shopping Ctr, Internal Illumination of Giant logo
Hi Martha,
Just an update,
As promised, I contacted the chairman of the Architectural Review Board (ARB) regarding administratively approving
the internal illumination of the Giant logo. I did this because the ARB sign guidelines state that external illumination is
preferred but that internal illumination can be considered on a case by case basis and that the ARB will evaluate the
specific design (of the logo) for size (adjusted in proportion to the accompanying lettering), balance, complexity, and
distance from and relationship to the Entrance Corridor. The chairman agreed with staff that administratively approving
the internally illuminated logo would be appropriate if the logo, currently 6' — 81 /z" tall, was reduced to the 4' — 11 3 /a"
height of the "G" in the Giant channel letters.
Is this something your client would be agreeable to?
Thanks,
Brent

Subject: ARB 2010 -113, Giant Signs, Rivanna Ridge Shopping Ctr, Staff Comments
Importance: High
Martha,
As promised, I am sending this email as a follow up to our phone conversation this afternoon. As I mentioned the primary
issues with the current proposal are as follows:
The current proposal exceeds the allowed square footage for signage on that building; only 200 s.f. is permitted and
approximately 285 s.f. is proposed.
• The approved Comprehensive Sign Criteria for the Rivanna Ridge Shopping Center only allow for red channel letters
(acrylic red #2793) in the approved sign band/building fascia while the current proposal is for purple letters in that
location. Numerous red channel letter signs (for other businesses) are currently on the building in that location.
• The four proposed cabinet signs (with "welcome") are not the approved sign type (channel letter) and not in the
approved sign location (building fascialsign band).
As we discussed, the approved Comprehensive Sign Criteria for Rivanna Ridge would have to be revised to allow for the
current proposal. Only the Architectural Review Board (ARB) can do that, which means that the proposal would have to
go for a full review by the Board at their November 15'h meeting. Staff would be preparing a staff report for the ARB with
recommendations. Our recommendation would not be for revising the approved sign criteria.
I suggested to you that I thought we could approve this application administratively if the applicant were willing to amend
the proposal as follows:
Revise the proposal by:
• Reducing the signage square footage so as not to exceed the permitted 200 s.f.
• Remove the proposed cabinet "welcome" signs.
• Revise the application to indicate that all proposed signage in the sign band/building fascia will be a red color to
match the approved red acrylic #2793.
Staff supports the internally illuminated Giant sign/logo as currently proposed. We are seeking direction from the
Architectural Review Board chairman to see if we can do that. I expect to hear from him tomorrow. Should you decide to
revise the application accordingly, revised drawings could be emailed to me to expedite things. An approval could be
obtained as soon as you were able to get the revised drawing to me.
As we discussed a few other minor housekeeping revisions required include revising the sign drawing to indicate:
• Whether the sign letters and logo are to be on a sign raceway or individually mounted direct to the wall.
• The proposed bulb type (fluorescent, LED etc). If LED is proposed, the following note, regarding the intensity, must
be added to the sign drawing:
"The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of
30 milliamp (ma) neon. "
• A note on the sign drawing stating:
"No light shall emit from the top, bottom or sides of the channel letters or logo".
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing back from you concerning the direction you want
to proceed.
Brent
