WHEN THE WORK CROSSES EXISTING UTILITIES THE EXISTING UTILITIES SHALL BE ADEQUATELY SUPPORTED AND PROTECTED FROM DAMAGE DUE TO THE WORK. ALL METHODS FOR SUPPORTING AND MAINTAINING THE EXISTING UTILITIES SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE RESPECTIVE UTILITY COMPANY AND/OR THE ENGINEER. CONTRACTOR SHALL EXERCISE CARE TO INSURE THAT THE GRADE AND ALIGNMENT OF EXISTING UTILITIES ARE MAINTAINED AND THAT NO JOINTS OR CONNECTIONS ARE DISPLACED. BACKFILL SHALL BE CAREFULLY PLACED AND COMPACTED TO PREVENT FUTURE DAMAGE OR SETTLEMENT TO EXISTING UTILITIES.
