Katurah,
I have completed my review of this application for compliance with the Architectural Review Board (ARB)
Sign Guidelines and identified the following issues that would need to be addressed for an administrative
approval (Certificate of Appropriateness).
Issue: Proposed Redesign of Exterior Elevation/Issuance of Sign Permit
A separate ARB application has been received for the redesign of the building exterior. That proposal is
scheduled for review at the April 16, 2012 ARB meeting. Issuance of an ARB approval (Certificate of
Appropriateness) for the proposed signage is contingent upon that review /approval.
Issue: ARB Review Fee
The required $120 ARB review fee for this application has not been paid. That fee will need to be paid before
the sign permit can be issued.
Issue: Sign Colors
ARB Sign Guidelines state that sign colors must be harmonious with each other and not clash with the site in
daylight or night. Neither a color sample or the Pantone equivalent number was provided for the red plex 2157
proposed for the URGENT CARE text.
• Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing to include the Pantone number for the red plex 2157 so that
it can be evaluated with the other proposed colors.
Issue: Sign Square Footage /Zoning Ordinance
Stewart Wright, Permit Planner, has determined that the total sign square footage proposed exceeds what is
permitted in the Zoning Ordinance. He has determined that 149.4 sf is proposed while only 118 sf is permitted.
He can be reached at 434 - 296 -5832, x 3024 or swright2(aalbemarle.org.
• Recommendation: Please revise the sign size accordingly and email the new proposal to both of us.
Issue: Internal Illumination of Logo
ARB Sign Guidelines encourage the use of external lighting for graphics and logos. Internal illumination of the
proposed cross logo and swoosh (blue line) cannot be administratively approved.
• Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing to indicate the proposed cross logo and swoosh (blue line)
graphic shall not be illuminated.
Issue: LED illumination /Intensity
The ARB requires the following note regarding intensity of illumination on all application drawings where LED
is proposed: The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single
stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
• Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing to include the required note regarding LED intensity.
Please let me know you received this email and if you plan to revise accordingly. Should you have any questions, I would
be happy to discuss this over the phone. Emailing revised drawings is the preferred method of submitting revisions.
