Proposal
To overlay a new 36" high fascia on an existing fuel pump canopy to provide adequate space for signage. The
proposal includes 3 illuminated channel letter signs and graphic on the new fascia.
Context
This section of the Corridor is characterized predominately by large estates, with the occasional single family and
small commercial use located along its path. The vernacular landscape is largely defined by short and distant views of
rolling topography with large stands of mature, mixed deciduous /evergreen forest, and open pasture /grassland.
Visibility
The fuel canopy is located just outside of the right -of -way line. As a result, both end elevations and the front (EC)
elevation are highly visible.

Channel lettering (mounted on a raceway or
individual letters) is preferred to cabinet signs
because cabinet signs tend to appear less integrated
with the building. Channel letters overlay the wall
material and allow the structure of the building to
—read through with less interruption. This results in
a more coordinated overall appearance.
Since external illumination does not fit every case,
individual channel letters – a type of internally
illuminated sign that has less visual clutter impact on
the Entrance Corridors – may also be approved.
Channel letters are generally the preferred type of
internally illuminated wall sign because they project
the total sign and are identifiable with the daytime
image of the sign.
Color: Colors must be harmonious with each other.
Colors must not clash with other elements on the site,
both when viewed in daylight and at night, whether
the signs are externally or internally lit. Overly
intense color, such as but not limited to dayglo or
fluorescent colors, are prohibited.
The use of three colors or fewer is more appropriate
for signs in the Entrance Corridor. Black and white
are counted as colors. Additional colors may be
approved if they contribute to a balanced and unified
sign design.
Sign Lettering and Typeface: The number of
typefaces should be limited to one.
The use of three colors or less is more appropriate for
canopy signs in the Entrance Corridors. Black and
white are counted as colors.
The proposed direct -mount channel letter
signs meet the guideline for recommended
sign type, allowing the canopy structure to
read through. The proposed internal
illumination is standard for fuel pump
canopy signs. The applicant has verbally
indicated that LED is the proposed bulb type;
however, the application drawings do not
contain the intensity note the ARB has
required in the past.
The proposal meets the guidelines regarding
the quantity of sign colors and typefaces. The
proposed channel letter face color is yellow:
PMS 109C, a color chip located directly in
the middle of the Pantone page (color range).
While the ARB has previously identified the
lower three chips on Pantone pages as a
range containing colors appropriate for the
Entrance Corridors, the lower three on this
page would not be identified as shades of
yellow. Recently yellow faces were approved
for Wells Fargo channel letter signs in the
Entrance Corridors. That yellow PMS 123C
was also located directly in the middle of the
Pantone page. The Sunoco yellow, with its
earth tone quality, compliments the blue
canopy background, meeting the guideline
encouraging harmonious colors.
Revise the application
drawings to indicate the use of
internal LED for the channel
letters. Include the following
note on the drawing: The level
of illumination provided by the
LED lights will not exceed the
illumination produced by a
single stroke of 30 milliamp
(ma) neon.
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends the following as the primary points of discussion:
1. The integration of the proposed canopy fascia with the existing structure.
2. Coordination of the altered canopy with the existing retail building.
3. The appropriateness of the multi -color Sunoco horizon graphic.
Staff recommends approval with the following conditions:
1. Revise the application drawings to indicate the existing columns, concrete dispenser base and visible portion of the existing fascia shall be painted a
medium/dark gray color. Provide the Pantone number for that color for review and include the number on the drawing.
2. Revise the application drawings to include a note indicating the canopy fascia shall not be illuminated.
3. Revise the proposal by removing the proposed Sunoco horizon graphic from the fascia.
4. Revise the application drawings to indicate the use of internal LED for the channel letters. Include the following note on the drawing: The level of
illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
5. Provide the $590.00 ARB Building Permit application fee.

Channel lettering (mounted on a raceway or
individual letters) is preferred to cabinet signs
because cabinet signs tend to appear less integrated
with the building. Channel letters overlay the wall
material and allow the structure of the building to
—read through with less interruption. This results in
a more coordinated overall appearance.
Since external illumination does not fit every case,
individual channel letters – a type of internally
illuminated sign that has less visual clutter impact on
the Entrance Corridors – may also be approved.
Channel letters are generally the preferred type of
internally illuminated wall sign because they project
the total sign and are identifiable with the daytime
image of the sign.
Color: Colors must be harmonious with each other.
Colors must not clash with other elements on the site,
both when viewed in daylight and at night, whether
the signs are externally or internally lit. Overly
intense color, such as but not limited to dayglo or
fluorescent colors, are prohibited.
The use of three colors or fewer is more appropriate
for signs in the Entrance Corridor. Black and white
are counted as colors. Additional colors may be
approved if they contribute to a balanced and unified
sign design.
Sign Lettering and Typeface: The number of
typefaces should be limited to one.
The use of three colors or less is more appropriate for
canopy signs in the Entrance Corridors. Black and
white are counted as colors.
The proposed direct -mount channel letter
signs meet the guideline for recommended
sign type, allowing the canopy structure to
read through. The proposed internal
illumination is standard for fuel pump
canopy signs. The applicant has verbally
indicated that LED is the proposed bulb type;
however, the application drawings do not
contain the intensity note the ARB has
required in the past.
The proposal meets the guidelines regarding
the quantity of sign colors and typefaces. The
proposed channel letter face color is yellow:
PMS 109C, a color chip located directly in
the middle of the Pantone page (color range).
While the ARB has previously identified the
lower three chips on Pantone pages as a
range containing colors appropriate for the
Entrance Corridors, the lower three on this
page would not be identified as shades of
yellow. Recently yellow faces were approved
for Wells Fargo channel letter signs in the
Entrance Corridors. That yellow PMS 123C
was also located directly in the middle of the
Pantone page. The Sunoco yellow, with its
earth tone quality, compliments the blue
canopy background, meeting the guideline
encouraging harmonious colors.
Revise the application
drawings to indicate the use of
internal LED for the channel
letters. Include the following
note on the drawing: The level
of illumination provided by the
LED lights will not exceed the
illumination produced by a
single stroke of 30 milliamp
(ma) neon.
SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends the following as the primary points of discussion:
1. The integration of the proposed canopy fascia with the existing structure.
2. Coordination of the altered canopy with the existing retail building.
3. The appropriateness of the multi -color Sunoco horizon graphic.
Staff recommends approval with the following conditions:
1. Revise the application drawings to indicate the existing columns, concrete dispenser base and visible portion of the existing fascia shall be painted a
medium/dark gray color. Provide the Pantone number for that color for review and include the number on the drawing.
2. Revise the application drawings to include a note indicating the canopy fascia shall not be illuminated.
3. Revise the proposal by removing the proposed Sunoco horizon graphic from the fascia.
4. Revise the application drawings to indicate the use of internal LED for the channel letters. Include the following note on the drawing: The level of
illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
5. Provide the $590.00 ARB Building Permit application fee.
