In my email of March 7`'' to Joey (see below), I indicated you would need to complete the application as a Building Permit Review which requires that a $590 review fee accompany the application. Instead, you completed the application as Conceptual Plan /Advisory Review (see attached copy of your application) which requires no review fee. Please send the $590 review fee as soon as possible; final approval of this proposal will not be granted until that fee is paid. The check should be made out to Albemarle County and include a note indicating it is the review fee for `ARB 2012 -43, Building Permit Review ". Thanks, Brent Brent W. Charlottesville, VA 22902 From: Brent Nelson Sent: Wednesday, March 07, 2012 4:29 PM To: 'Joey Blackwell' Cc: 'steve jewell'; Stewart Wright Subject: ARB 2012 -19, Sunoco Sign, Staff Comments Importance: High Joey, I have completed my review and have identified the following issues regarding your proposal. Regarding the Canopy Signage: As we discussed, your proposed structural changes to the canopy (see attached), allowing for the Sunoco channel letter sign, would require a building permit. As a result, Architectural Review Board (ARB) review and approval of the revised canopy structure would be required. The ARB would be reviewing all proposed changes to the canopy, including structural changes, signage and painting or vinyl applied to the canopy. I have attached the ARB application and checklist of items required in your submission. You will need to complete the application as a Building Permit Review. The attached checklist indicates what needs to be included in the submission for a Building Permit Review. Below are some ARB Guidelines regarding canopy structures /canopy signage to keep in mind: • The size of the canopy fascia and canopy support columns shall be in proportion to the overall size of the canopy structure. The fascia shall not exceed 36" in total height, including any accent bands. o Issue: the attached drawing you provided shows the existing canopy structure extending midway beneath the proposed 36" fascia. The ARB is not likely to approve this since it does not meet the guideline. • Canopy fascias shall not be illuminated. • Canopy fascias shall be limited to the use of one principal color, with ARB review. o Issue: the canopy signage proposal shows at least 5 colors on the fascia. The ARB is not likely to approve this since it does not meet the guideline. • Canopy related elements, including fuel dispensers, support columns, spandrels, planters, etc. shall be compatible with the character of the building and site and shall not be used for advertising. o Issue: internal illumination of the signage on the dispenser is not likely to be approved. • Canopy sign colors shall be limited to 3 colors. o Issue: It appears that 5 or 6 may be proposed. Regarding the Freestanding Si ng age: The following issues have been identified and would need to be sufficiently addressed for an administrative approval. • The Pantone color number for the Onyx Gray (aluminum base) was not provided on the drawing. • A planting plan, integrating the sign structure into the overall site landscape, was not included in the submission. Such a plan should include evergreen shrubs around the sign base of a sufficient height to mitigate the height of the sign base. • Dimensions (height /width) were not included on the sign drawing for the sign base, each sign panel and all text and logos. • The sign drawing would need to be revised to indicate the white borders around the sign panels shall not illuminate. Emailing the revised drawings of the freestanding sign is preferred. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns. Brent Brent W.
