Subject: ARB 12 -84, University Tire Sign @ Airport Rd., Staff Comments
Importance: High
LE
I have completed my review of your sign application for University Tire at Airport Road and identified the following
issues needing to be addressed before I can administratively approve this proposal.
Sign Type: Cabinet
ARB Guidelines state:
Channel lettering (mounted on a raceway or individual letters) is preferred to cabinet signs because cabinet
signs tend to appear less integrated with the building. Channel letters overlay the wall material and allow
the structure of the building to read through with less interruption. This results in a more coordinated
overall appearance....... When channel letters cannot be adequately accommodated, internally illuminated
cabinet signs may be considered.
• The proposed cabinet style sign type cannot be administratively approved since a channel letter sign can be
accommodated in the proposed location above the 3 -part window and would meet the sign guideline. Note:
the existing UNIVERSITY TIRE & A UTO CENTER channel letter wall sign was approved administratively
earlier this year.
• Your other option is to request a full review of the current sign proposal by the Architectural Review Board
at their August 20, 2012 meeting. A representative for the sign applicant would have to be present at that
meeting.
Other Issues•
Color sample:
• A Pantone color number (or color sample) would need to be provided for the proposed Pantone Reflex Blue
which does not appear in the Pantone Formula Guide.
Sign size:
ARB Guidelines state:
The size of a wall sign shall be coordinated with the size of the architectural element on which it is placed.
The sign should not overcrowd the architectural element, the wall, or the sign area.
The sign in its proposed location is off - center to the 3 -part window beneath, has an over - scaled appearance
with the available wall area and as a result does not appear integrated with the building design. Reducing the
sign length to match the total window width and centering the sign with the window below would be more
appropriate.
Missing information:
• Proposed dimensions (length & height) for both the text & the Bib man logo are not on sign drawing.
Opaque background:
• Both the Zoning Ordinance and ARB Sign Guidelines require that the background of cabinet signs be
opaque. This was not indicated on the sign drawing.
ARB Review Fee:
• The required ARB review fee was not included with this application. The sign permit cannot be issued until
the review fee is paid.
Please reply by email no later than Noon, Monday, July 23, 2012 (sooner if possible), indicating whether or not you
intend to revise the proposal for an administrative approval or wish to have the ARB review the current proposal at the
August 20, 2012 meeting. Revised drawings are not required by the July 23rd deadline and can be submitted by email.
