ARB 12 -113, Kiddie Academy Sign, Staff Comments
Importance: High
Marcie,
I have completed my review of the above -noted sign application. The following issues would need to be
adequately addressed for an administrative approval.
Sign Type /Contour:
ARB Sign Guidelines state:
Channel lettering (mounted on a raceway or individual letters) is preferred to cabinet signs because cabinet
signs tend to appear less integrated with the building. Channel letters overlay the wall material and allow
the structure of the building to read through with less interruption. This results in a more coordinated
overall appearance....... When channel letters cannot be adequately accommodated, internally illuminated
cabinet signs may be considered.
• The proposed contour style sign type cannot be administratively approved since a channel letter sign can be
accommodated in the proposed location.
Other Issues•
Color:
• The proposed Red PMS 185 is considered an overly intense color and is a chip located fourth from the bottom of
the Pantone page. The ARB has previously identified the lower three chips on Pantone pages as a range
containing colors that are appropriate for the Entrance Corridors. Revising the proposed Red to PMS 186 or 187
would be appropriate.
• ARB Sign Guidelines encourage the use of three colors or less with black and white considered as colors.
Additional colors can be approved if they contribute to sign balance /unity. The proposed sign drawing indicates
the use of five colors. The drawing lists the use of Pink PMS 489; however, that color could not be located on the
sign drawing.
Text Outline:
• ARB Sign Guidelines indicate that the width of text outline should be proportional to the width of the letter with
an outline width of 1/8" having been found to be generally appropriate. The proposed sign drawing does not
indicate the width of the text outline.
Opaque Background:
• ARB Sign Guidelines and the Zoning Ordinance require that the background of a cabinet sign be opaque. The
proposed contour sign is considered a cabinet sign in that regard. The sign drawing does not indicate that the
background is to be opaque.
LED /Intensity Note:
• The sign drawing indicates the use of internal LED lighting but does not contain the required LED intensity note:
The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of
30 milliamp (ma) neon.
Please reply by email no later than Noon, Monday, September 24, 2012 (sooner if possible), indicating whether or not you
intend to revise the proposal for an administrative approval or wish to have the ARB review the current proposal at the
October 15, 2012 meeting. A representative for the application would be required at that meeting. Revised drawings are
not required by the September 24`h deadline and can be submitted by email at your earliest convenience.
You are welcome to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.
