We met the day you came in to make your sign application. Stewart Wright, who you also met that day, reviews your application for compliance with the Zoning Ordinance. I have completed my review and identified the following issues that need to be addressed for an administrative ARB approval. Sign Materials: ARB Sign Guidelines state that materials used in both the sign and its support structure should be complimentary. • You are proposing the Fieldstone Canyon Gray stone veneer for the monument columns. It is hard to evaluate the material from the small photo in the brochure. Would it be possible to see a sample of the material? Is there a local location where this sample has been used that I could see? • The sign drawing refers to the sign face material as slate in one place and as granite in another location on the drawing; please clarify. Please provide a photo of the sign face material along with the manufacturer's product I.D. • The sign drawing indicates a slate cap is proposed for the monument columns. Please provide a photo of the slate along with the manufacturer's product I.D. Landscaping ARB Sign Guidelines state that the applicant is to use ground cover, shrubs and/or trees to integrate freestanding signs into the overall site landscape. A landscape proposal was not included with this submission. Attached you should find the Albemarle County Recommended Plant List as an aid in plant selection. Suggestion: Low evergreen shrubs at the base of the retaining wall radius with taller shrubs and a small tree (e.g. Crepe Mrytle) on the backside (north end) of the sign monument, all in a planting bed with a continuous natural -like shape, would be appropriate. It is hard to describe this, so I would be happy to explain over the phone or in person. The width, radius and maximum height of the stone retaining wall was not indicated; please provide. Sign Lettering_ ARB Sign Guidelines state that lettering should be in proportion (font size and typeface style) to the sign. • Please provide the length and height of each row of text and the graphic (logo). Sim Lighting: The Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance requires lighting that is 3,000 lumens or greater in intensity be a full cutoff style fixture. The proposed solar fixture would need to be less than 3,000 lumens in output since it is not a full cutoff style fixture. Also, what is the color of the fixture? It should be a color that would blend with the sign structure. • Please provide the lumens output for the proposed solar fixture and the fixture color You are welcome to email the requested materials. I do not need to keep the Fieldstone Canyon Gray stone veneer sample. I would suggest that you notify me when it is delivered so I can be on the lookout for it. Does Allied Concrete have the sample? They are just around the corner from our office so I could go there to see it. Please do not hesitate to call or email me should you have any questions or concerns. I will put it on my calendar to call you Monday morning to go over this. Brent Brent W. Nelson Planner Planning Services Department of Community Development County of Albemarle 401 McIntire Rd.
