HomeMy WebLinkAboutARB201200142 Review Comments Miscellaneous Submittal 2012-11-07Brent Nelson From: Brent Nelson Sent: Wednesday, November 07, 2012 10:55 AM To: 'Don Frye' Cc: Stewart Wright Subject: ARB 12 -142, Mobile Signs, Staff Comments Importance: High Tracking: Don, Recipient 'Don Frye' Stewart Wright Delivery Delivered: 11/7/2012 10:55 AM I have completed my review of the Mobile sign proposal (ARB 12 -142) for compliance with established ARB Sign Guidelines. This review is based on the alternate Mobile canopy proposal your provided and the original freestanding sign proposal. The following issues have been identified that would need to be adequately addressed for an administrative approval. Canopy Sign Channel Letter Color: This proposal includes the use of Red PMS 485 for a channel letter face color ( "O" in Mobile). The Architectural Review Board (ARB) has previously found that shade of red to be an inappropriate color for Entrance Corridor signage. The ARB has suggested Red PMS 187C as an acceptable substitute. • Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing by replacing the use of Red PMS 485 with Red PMS 187 for the canopy signage. The proposed channel letter return and trim color is not clearly indicated on the drawing. Is the white outline shown around the edge of each channel letter a white trim cap? • Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing to clearly note the return and trim cap colors and address the question regarding the white outline. LED Intensity Note: Where LED illumination is proposed, the ARB requires the following note regarding the limitation on intensity: The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (mo) neon. • Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing to include the required note regarding LED intensity. Miscellaneous: Recommendation: Update the canopy sign drawing in the original application to reflect the alternate canopy sign proposal. This way all the required information (elevation views, etc) are on the same drawing. Freestanding Sign Sign Colors: This proposal includes the use of Red PMS 485 for "O" in Mobile. The Architectural Review Board (ARB) has previously found that shade of red to be an inappropriate color for Entrance Corridor signage. The ARB has suggested Red PMS 187C as an acceptable substitute. The PMS equivalent numbers for proposed colors in the Everyday logo are not shown on the drawing. • Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing by replacing the use of Red PMS 485 with Red PMS 187 for the freestanding sign and include the PMS #s for the Everyday logo. Opaque Background: The Zoning Ordinance and ARB Sign Guidelines require that cabinet signs have a non - illuminated background, or an opaque (zero light transmission) background. The proposed illumination of the yellow background behind the Diesel text does not meet that requirement. Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing by removing the proposed illumination of the yellow Diesel background. Include the following note on the drawing: All backgrounds shall be opaque, only the text and Everyday logo shall illuminate. Sign Dimensions: Recommendation: Revise the sign drawing to include the overall (height and width) dimensions for the MOBILE text and EVERYDAY logo. Please email revised drawings and call me should you have any questions or concerns. It appears that Stewart Wright, Zoning Permit Planner, has not completed his review of this proposal for compliance with the Zoning Ordianance. You may want to contact him (434- 296 -5832 x 3024, swri.hg_t2kalbemarle.org). Be sure and provide him with the alternate canopy sign proposal. Brent Brent W.
