Hi Tanya - I have completed my review of the planting plan for the proposed Carrsbrook sign. The ARB General Sign
Guidelines state that ground cover, shrubs and/or trees are to be used to integrate the freestanding sign into the overall
landscape development of the site. Here are the issues with the current proposal.
The drawing provided, showing five juniper shrubs directly in front of the sign, does not meet the guideline referenced
above. The planting proposal should include a variety of shrub types with varying mature heights & sizes. The goal is not
to encircle the sign with one or two plant types, but to create a planting design that is informal and more varied and
naturalistic in appearance, so as to integrate the sign into the existing landscape. The planting should be located on all
sides of the sign with taller shrubs framing it from behind, as viewed from Route 29. A good planting design professional
such as a horticulturalist or landscape architect should understand this and could advise you.
The planting plan needs to:
• Be to -scale and show the exact location of each proposed planting — so the distance between plantings (and
between the plantings and the sign) can be verified.
• List the full name of each plant material proposed and the number (quantity) to be used.
• Indicate the height at planting of each plant material; 24" tall minimum, at planting, is required.
You are welcome to contact me should you have any questions. This is a really nice sign design you have proposed and it
would benefit from an equally nice planting proposal to incorporate it into the site.

Good morning Brent,
Please find the attached landscape plans for the Carrsbrook sign. They wanted something with very easy maintenance.
There is a hand -drawn plan from our client and we have included a scaled version on to the site plan with Latin plant
names. The photo is just for reference regarding the slope.
Please let me know if you need anything else.
Best,
Tanya Rutherford

Hi Tanya - I have completed my review of your revisions and all the issues, with the exception of the need for the
planting plan, have been addressed. I understand you are working on getting the planting plan developed and submitted.
Thanks,
Brent

Tanya - I have completed my review of the above -noted sign proposal. The following issues have been
identified that will need to be adequately addressed for my administrative approval.
Sign Materials:
• Revise the sign drawing to indicate the material proposed for the sign posts and the backer panel (behind
the granite) — It is 1 /4" thick aluminum plate, added to drawing.
Sign Colors:
• The application included a square metal color sample labeled on the back as Pantone Warm Gray 4C,
Text Paint Fill. The color of the sample does not match Pantone Warm Gray 4C — it is much darker.
Please explain discrepancy. I may have labeled the samples incorrectly? The samples I have here match
the Pantones. Please see attached photos. Warm Gray 4C is the lighter color (similar to taupe) which is
the text color and the Cool Gray 11 C is the darker (charcoal) which will be the post color and is similar
to the granite color.
• In the title block section of the drawing, it states that the posts are to be black when the drawing states
they are to be Cool Gray 4C — please correct. It is Cool Gray 11 C, correctly noted in details above the
sign. I removed the note about painted black in the title block.
Sign Dimensions:
• Revise the sign drawing to indicate the total width of the sign text. Added 5'8" wide.
Sign Landscaping:
• ARB Sign Guidelines require the use of ground cover, shrubs and/or trees to integrate freestanding signs
into the overall site landscape. A landscape plan, addressing this, was not included. Provide a landscape
plan showing the use of a variety of shrub types and heights and ground cover in a design that ties the
sign into the wooded landscape behind it. A professional such as a landscape architect or horticulturalist
should be able to assist you with this. We are working on this!
Sign Illumination:
It appears the sign is not to be illuminated. If correct, add a note to the drawing indicating that. Note was added.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions.
