Full Cutoff Light Fixtures in Albemarle County
In Albemarle County exterior light fixtures with lamps that emit 3000 lumens or more
must be full cutoff fixtures. Albemarle's definition of "full cutoff' may be different
from the defmitions used by other localities, by lighting manufacturers, by the Illumi-
nating Engineering Society, by the International Dark -Sky Association, and others. In
Albemarle, "full cutoff' means that all light emitted by the fixture, either directly from
the lamp or indirectly from the fixture, must be projected below the horizontal plane.
IMPORTANT
If a lamp emits 3000 lu-
mens or more, the fixture
must be a full cutoff fixture
according to the definition
below. Lamps below 3000
lumens are not subject to
the full cutoff requirement.
Full cutoff luminaire =
an outdoor light fixture
shielded in such a manner
that all (100 %) light emit-
ted by the fixture, either
directly from the lamp or
indirectly from the fixture,
is projected below the hori-
zontal plane. (4.17.3)
3000 lumens =
160 watts incandescent
160 watts quartz halogen
35 watts fluorescent
75 watts mercury vapor
40 watts metal halide
45 watts h.p. sodium
25 watts l.p. sodium
The ARB may impose ad
ditional requirements for
light fixtures in the En-
trance Corridors.
MEETS ORDINANCE
Shoebox style fixtures with flat lenses
meet Albemarle's full cutoff require-
ment.

In recent years, manufacturers have
begun to offer more decorative style
fixtures that also meet the full cutoff
definition.
>J
I
These fixtures have been approved by
staff for developments in Albemarle
County because they meet the full
cutoff requirement. The types of light
fixtures illustrated in this column can
be approved by staff.
I!WJJ1 IswayA wn ►•ipsi
These fixtures that resemble traditional
coach lanterns are typically described by
manufacturers as full cutoff fixtures, but
they don't meet Albemarle's full cutoff
definition.
i
Also, some wall fixtures that might appear
to be full cutoff fixtures do not meet Albe-
marle's full cutoff definition. Like pole
mounted fixtures, wall lights that emit 3000
lumens or more must be full cutoff fixtures.
The wall fixture pictured here is not a full
cutoff fixture, but several manufacturers
provide a variety of wall fixtures that do
meet Albemarle's full cutoff requirement.
Although choosing fixtures that meet the
requirements is a quicker solution, a
waiver may be requested for fixtures that
don't meet these requirements. If the crite-
ria of ordinance section 4.17.5 are met, the
Board of Supervisors may grant the
waiver. Applicants that want to use
these types of fixtures are strongly en-
couraged to request the waiver at the
time of initial site plan submittal and to
plan for the extra review time needed to
process the waiver request.
The lightfixtures illustrated here do not represent the full array ofstyles or types that may be approved by staff, approved by waiver, or denied.
They are presented as examples of fixtures that have been proposed and reviewed. These illustrations are not endorsements for any particular
lighting manufacturer or representative. Please consult the Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance for additional information.
