Dear Business Owner,
This letter is to inform you of applicable sign allowances under the Albermarle County Zoning
Ordinance. Please take note of the included information and how it relates to your establishment and
advertising. Our goal is to assist you with utilizing permitted.signage and to inform you so as to prevent
sign violations. Sign regulations are found within Chapter 18 (Zoning Ordinance) Section 4.15.
Sign Allowances in Albemarle Cou= for Commercially -Zoned Property (Cl, CO, HQ
Per Albemarle County Zoning Ordinance
• Section 4.15.7 prohibits certain signs, such as moving sighs and signs attached to light poles or in the VDOT
right-of-way. Signage must be on private property out of the public right-of-way, except for signage allowed
through a VDOT-issued permit. Generally, the public right-of-way coincides with the power / telephone poles
running along the roadway. Therefore, signage placed on the road side of the power poles / telephone lines is
likely within the right-of-way. The Cortnty proactively enforces illegal signage in the Entrance Corridors.
Temporary Signs
o Each "establishment" is allowed up to six temporary signs per year {Sec. 4.15.4A}.
o Each temporary sign may be erected'for up to 15 days.
o For most locations, a temporary sign may be 32 square feet in size, up to 12 feet in height and as close as 5
feet from the right-of-way.
o The aggregate temporary signage for each establishment may not exceed 60 day's per year. Time that a .
temporary sign is up without a pennit is deducted from the time allowed.
o Each sign requires a $25 sign permit from the Department of Community Development. These signs are not
subject to approval by the Architectural Review Board. The permits are typically reviewed within 48 hours.
Permanent Signs
o Each "establishment" is allowed one permanent freestanding sign per street frontage or two per entrance, for
each lot with 100 or more feet of continuous street frontage. Lots greater than four acres with more than one
approved entrance are entitled to additional signage. Any new signage and existing signage are aggregated.
o There are no time limits on permanent signs.
o For most locations, a sign may be 32 square feet in size, up to 12 feet in height and as close as 5 feet from the
right-of-way.
o Each sign requires a pennit from the Department of Community Development. These signs are subject to
approval by the Architectural Review Board.

Letter to Business Owners
Illegal advertisements removed by County staff may be discarded, and violators may be subject to a
$200 civil penalty for each initial violation and up to $500 for each subsequent violation.
