John - I received your planting plan for the Village Green freestanding, tenant panel sign (attachment ARB 14 -137) and I
am confused. When we met on December 19th, I thought we agreed:
The sign location and proposed planting needed to be shown on the site plan amendment that was approved for
Jeff Gayle in 2013, showing a new entrance and exit where the sign is proposed (attachment ARB 14 -137 Site
Plan Amend.). I provided you with copies of that amendment to do your proposal on. I also emailed the site plan
amendment to Jeff so you two could discuss your proposal.
The drawing needed to show that the sign location met the required 5' setback from the property line.
The intent of the ARB sign guideline is not to encircle the sign with plants but to propose a larger and more
freeform planting layout that incorporates the sign, the nearby proposed Norway Maple tree (attachment ARB 14-
13 7 Site Plan Amend) and other proposed plantings that fill in that corner of the site — integrating the sign
structure into the overall landscape development. To help illustrate, I have attached a photo of the similar nearby
Stonefield freestanding, tenant panel sign and associated landscaping. Obviously I am not suggesting you
duplicate their exact proposal. However, their proposal shows how with enough planting, and the right planting,
the sign structure has a more integrated appearance with the site.
You are welcome to call me to discuss this further.

Jeff - I met with John Garvey this morning regarding the planting proposal needed for your freestanding sign. I provided
him with the attached site plan amendment for Village Green, prepared by Justin Shimp, and approved in November
2013. This shows the revised site entrance from Hydraulic Road and a suggested sign location. I told John I would email
the drawing to you and Lewis so all three have the current site plan drawing for any discussion.

John - I think we need to meet and go over this next week. I just discovered today that a revised site entrance /exit was
approved for this part of the shopping center in 2013. Gropen did not use that drawing in their submission. They showed
the sign location on the original site plan from 1987. The 2013 drawing shows the revised in/out entrance, the sign
location and proposed planting.
I need to visit the site and do a little more research. I will be in touch with you tomorrow or Monday regarding a day and
time to meet at my office next week.

Subject: Signage
Jeff I got the copy of the drawing from Lewis rector regarding the sign at the village green I am confused why the county wants plants
put around a base of the sign when the base is 24 inches high and constructed out of decorative rock and the minimum requirement
height size for plants is 24 inches. You may want to contact the County and get more details of how many plants need to be installed
and can they be put in a spot where they do not cover up the sign.
