Charlottesville,VA 22902 Albemarle County BE#V122001 Dear Mr. Brooks: On behalf of the applicants, SJ Collins Enterprises and Riverbend Management, Bohler Engineering hereby requests a variance for the above referenced project to allow a Variable Sediment Collection Area in lieu of a standard sediment trap. There are multiple locations on the development area of the site where a sediment trap is warranted to control and filter the runoff prior to entering the adjacent waterways. These locations however, will vary in elevation due to the construction of the retaining walls, and will need to rise in stages as the retaining wall construction advances. Thus, it is impossible to physically construct the traps to the Virginia Erosion Control Handbook criteria in a permanent location using set elevations. As such, we would like to use a Variable Sediment Collection Area which will have the same construction criteria as a standard sediment trap, however the elevations for wet and dry storage depth, as well as outfall inverts, will be variable in nature and will increase in elevation as the site grades rise. This Variable Sediment Collection Area can be manually installed and will control the runoff from the associated drainage areas. Further, care shall be given by the contractor while working along the retaining walls in order to ensure positive drainage towards the variable sediment collection areas at all times. Please find attached a $150.00 fee check for the requested variance.
