WW Associates 3040 Avemore Square Place Charlottesville,Virginia 22911 ECS Project No. 28:1816 Reference: Additional Hand Augers Farmington Country Club-Charlottesville,Virginia. Dear Mr. Umberger: ECS MID-ATLANTIC, LLC (ECS) is pleased to submit this letter report to WW Associates for the above- referenced project. Our services have been provided in general accordance with our correspondence dated November 12, 2014. This report is intended to provide additional information regarding ground water levels within the vicinity of the proposed bio-filter. Our field exploration was completed on November 19, 2014. An ECS Technician advanced three hand auger (HA) borings to depths of approximately 6 feet below the existing ground surface at the locations shown in the attachment. Borings were advanced to at least 6 feet below existing grades; at all locations the water level was noted to range between zero and 2 inches with slow infiltration, indicating that the water was from a perched condition. Based on the results of the hand augers, our professional opinion is that the BMP media base of EL ± 600 ft. MSL is proposed for above the seasonably high groundwater table. The data herein was obtained from the hand auger borings which indicate subsurface conditions at specific locations at the time of exploration. Conditions may vary between test locations. We have appreciated the opportunity to be of service to you. If you have any questions with regard to the information contained in this report, or if we can be of further assistance to you during construction, please do not hesitate to contact us. LpL I fl 0 Respectfully, ., 14,G ECS MID-ATLANTIC, LLC v AL NDER SARANT y n 0r— Lic. This report presents the results of the infiltration testing for storm water credits at the Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. Introduction The project site is located at 1625 Country Club Circle in Charlottesville, Virginia. At this time we do not have information regarding the types of storm water structures that are to be placed. Based on our conversation with Rob Umberger of WW Associates the infiltration elevations for all the tests that were conducted are three feet below existing grades. The purpose of this exploration was to explore the soil and groundwater conditions at the site and to provide infiltration testing to guide design and construction of possible storm water structures. Our exploration included eight (8) hand auger borings at the areas decided upon by WW Associates, performing a site reconnaissance to observe general topography, performing seven (7) infiltration tests, and providing an engineering letter report with infiltration rates for the infiltration areas. All hand auger borings were advanced to a depth of 3 ft. A Hand Auger Boring/Infiltration Test Location Plan is included in Appendix I. 4004 Hunterstand Court, Suite 102,Charlottesville,Virginia 22911 • T:434-973-3232 • F:434-973-3238 • www.ecslimited.com ECS Capitol Services,PLLC•ECS Carolinas.LLP•ECS Central,PLLC•ECS Florida,LLC•ECS Mid-Atlantic,LLC•ECS Midwest,LLC•ECS Southeast,LLC•ECS Texas,LLP Farmington Country Club Infiltration Testing Charlottesville, Virginia ECS Project No. 28:1755 Page 2 Field Exploration Procedures A total of eight (8) hand auger borings, designated as HA-1, HA-2, HA-3, etc. were completed to depths of 3 ft., below the existing site elevations in the storm water areas. Groundwater was encountered in HA-3 at a depth of 2 ft. Seven (7) infiltration tests (designated as IT-1, IT-2, etc.)were performed at their corresponding hand auger borings. After recovery, the soil samples were classified visually in accordance with ASTM D 2487 (United Soil Classification System). An experienced Engineering Geologist classified each soil sample on the basis of texture and plasticity in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). The group symbol for each soil type is indicated in parentheses following the soil description on the boring logs. The soil scientist grouped the various soil types into the major zones noted on the boring logs. The stratification lines designating the interfaces between earth materials on the boring logs are approximate; in situ, the transitions may be gradual. A boring location plan and a description of the USCS are included as attachments to this report. In-situ saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) testing was completed at each testing location at intervals beneath existing grades of approximately 30 inches to 36 inches in all the hand auger borings. The purpose of infiltration testing was to obtain an estimated infiltration rate for the near surface soils. Our infiltration testing was performed using a Johnson Precision PermeameterTM and in accordance with the manufacturer's testing guidelines and procedures. The permeameter establishes a constant head of water at a predetermined depth in a borehole by use of a precision valve and float assembly. The rate of water flow into the borehole required to maintain the constant head is then determined at selected intervals. The permeameter can effectively measure saturated hydraulic conductivity at any desired depth in the vadose zone ranging from 0.5 feet to 98 feet and can measure Ksat in a range of 10-2 to 10-7 cm/sec. The use of the Precision Permeameter is a generally accepted method for measuring saturated hydraulic conductivity (infiltration rate) of in-situ soils. Infiltration test data is summarized below and the Ksat worksheets are included as attachments to this report. Typically, soils with the Hydrologic Soil Group designations of A and B are considered suitable for infiltration purposes. Some soils designated as C type soils are considered suitable for infiltration practices, but these soils would need to be evaluated on a case specific basis. Soils with group designations of D are typically not considered suitable for infiltration. Groundwater was encountered in HA-3/IT-3 at a depth of 2 ft. Ground water was not encountered within the other seven borings. The soils encountered within the hand augured areas were generally cohesive in nature and consisted of Sandy CLAY (CL), CLAY (CL), and Clayey SAND. These soil materials were in a stiff to very stiff condition, yielding low infiltration results. The existing conditions of the soils encountered at HA-2/IT-2, and HA-8/IT-8 appear to support an infiltration component. The existing soils at HA-1/IT-1, HA-3/IT-3, HA-4/IT-4, HA- 5/IT-5, HA-6/IT/6, and HA-7/IT-7 do not support an infiltration component.
