Additional parking and an expanded auto drop -off will be provided. The existing unsightly kitchen service area, which is in close proximity and directly visible from the Entrance Corridor, will be visually screened as part of the project. Playground facilities will be relocated and expanded. It is anticipated that the project will be registered with the United States Green Building Council and that LEED certification will be pursued. The Albemarle County School Board has endorsed the design for the project. The new addition, located on the east side of the existing school, is rotated slightly with respect to the existing building (and Route 250) for several reasons: 1) To preserve the existing playfield on the east side of the site. 2) To orient the new addition for optimal natural day lighting (in accordance with LEED principles). 3) To provide a more direct circulation path from the end of the existing dead -end classroom wing to core spaces such as the cafeteria and gym. The new gymnasium is situated on the south side of the site (adjacent to Route 250) along with the school's other existing assembly spaces (cafeteria and existing gym) and should be in close proximity to parking areas for after -hours community use. The gym will be approximately 26 feet tall. Like the classrooms, the gym is oriented to optimize the benefits of natural day lighting and frame the reorganized playfields. The height of the brick cladding on the gymnasium matches the height of the existing school's brick facade to achieve a harmonious compatibility between old and new and maintain the a human scale of the additions throughout. It is anticipated that much of the mechanical equipment can be concealed within an interior mezzanine. Brick to match the existing building will be the predominant exterior finish material. Large expanses of exterior wall (particularly with respect to the new gym) will be broken down in scale by the use of metal panels, window openings and canopies. In general, the use of metal panels will be restricted to areas of the building intended to be in shadow and out of reach. Sloping metal roofs over the new classrooms will help to visually screen from Route 250 existing large unsightly rooftop HVAC equipment on the existing building as well as any new rooftop units. LEED guidelines stipulate that roofs should be a light color to reduce heat gain and associated energy consumption. Most existing trees will remain and will be carefully protected during construction activities. New trees are proposed to shade the south side of the new classrooms.
