The plans cannot be approved as submitted. Please refer to the Albemarle County Design Standards Manual for the checklist, details and notes required for approval. The following items will be adequately addressed prior to final approval: A. SDP200800155: 1. The date and source of the topographic information: All topography should be at least visually field verified by the designer within the last year. [18- 32.6.6, 14- 302, Policy for date] 2. All slopes 25% and over (critical slopes by County Zoning Ord.) are shaded [18- 32.6.6, 14 -302] 3. Proposed slopes steeper than 3:1 have low maintenance (not grass) ground cover specified on the plan [Policy] 4. Safety railing shown for retaining walls over 4' high (building permit may be more strict) [Policy] 5. Labels on all drainage structures provided (and should match the drainage computations and profiles) 6. Details for any pipes or drainage structures through or under walls, showing endwalls, casings, or structural measures to bridge pipes or structures will be shown. 7. If there will be Pavement markings, please show them dimensioned and labeled. 8. If there will be Signs for traffic control, please show and label. B. WP0200800099 1. Erosion and sediment control narrative does not appear complete /correct. Please use the Albemarle County Design Manual Check list and the VESCH for required items of approval. Acres of disturbance and all E &SC measures will be bonded prior to issuance of the Grading Permit. 2. E &SC notes will be corrected to match the Design Manual. Engineering Review Comments Page 2 of 2 3. Wind erosion will be a concern with this project. Please show the (DC) Dust Control symbol on the plans and in the Legend. 4. Silt fence appears to be out of compliance with State law. However, the limitations due to excessive slopes may allow the County Engineer to grant a variance allowing the use of Wire - Supported Silt Fence in conjunction with a stone weir outlet to relieve the hydraulic pressure of the impounded stormwater. If proper perimeter controls cannot be shown in accordance with VESCL, then please submit a variance request to the County Engineer for modifications to the requirements. 5. Please show the stockpile locations on the plan and the E &SC measures to protect them. 6. Blanket and Matting is strongly recommended on all slopes over 25 %. 7. No work will be allowed within 5 feet of proposed drip edge of the Tree Protection per VESCH Std. & Spec. 3.38. If the Tree Protection is not a requirement of the County or other Agency, it is recommended they be removed from the plans and included in the contract documents with the contractor. Box 316 Charlottesville, VA 22902 -0316 Dear Ms. Taylor: A Preliminary Engineering Report prepared by Draper Aden Associates for the proposed Montalto Waterworks located in Albemarle County, has been reviewed by this office. The report is titled "Restoration of Montalto Design Narrative and Calculations" and is dated January 23, 2009. This report proposes to restore and rebuild part of the former Mountaintop Farm waterworks adjacent to Monticello as a nontransient noncommunity waterworks. A new pump will be installed in an existing well. The existing intermediate pumping station will be abandoned and replaced by a new station. A manganese grcensand filtration system will be installed to treat for iron and manganese. Finished water storage tanks and finished water pumping are also proposed. The Virginia Health Department, Office of Drinking Water, in accordance with 12 VAC 5 -590 -200 of the Commonwealth of Virginia Waterworks Regulations approves the Preliminary Engineering Report with the. following comments: 1. The existing well will need to be metered prior to the intermediate pumping station. 2. The hydropneumatic tank level settings may need to be adjusted to operate the tank more efficiently. One copy of the report is enclosed with a Department of Health sticker indicating approval. If we can be of additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Steve Kvech, P.E., District Engineer, at (540) 463 -7136, extension 124. Sincerely, Douglas M. Caldwell, P.E.
