The Shell signs are located on parcels in designated Entrance Corridors (Route 250 East and Route 250 West). As a result, they require a Certificate of Appropriateness (Architectural Review Board (ARB)) approval before the sign permit can be issued. The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors adopted ARB sign design guidelines located Here on the Albemarle County web site (www.albemarle.org). These are guidelines for the ARB and their staff to use when reviewing sign proposals. Page 4 of the sign guidelines states the following regarding sign colors: Colors must be harmonious with each other. (For more information on harmonious colors, go to Appendix C). Colors must not clash with other elements on the site, both when viewed in daylight and at night, whether the signs are externally or internally lit. Overly intense color, such as but not limited to dayglo or fluorescent colors, are prohibited. The use of three colors or fewer is more appropriate for signs in the Entrance Corridor. Black and white are counted as colors. Additional colors may be approved if they contribute to a balanced and unified sign design. During the review of a previous sign application, the ARB determined that red Pantone 485 had an overly intense appearance and therefore was inappropriate for signs in an entrance corridor. They directed staff not to administratively approve signs with that color and suggested that red Pantone 187 would be an acceptable substitute. I hope this helps to address what you were looking for.
