Hi Kim - No such thing as a dumb question—particularly when it involves signs. My ARB approval letter
(ARB201600046) is not the sign permit. Your sign permit file number is 62016005715. I checked our application tracking
system and the sign permit is still listed as "Under Review". My ARB approval letter is just one of the requirements
before they can issue the permit.
Stewart Wright (434-296-5832 ext. 3024 or swright2@albemarle.org ) is the zoning planner overseeing the sign permit
application. It may be they were waiting for the ARB approval letter to be entered in the system (which it is) before they
issue the permit. It is my understanding they will automatically mail the permit once approved. You should not start
construction of the sign until you have the issued (approved) sign permit.

RE:ARB-2016-46: Hurley's Tavern Sign
Dear Ms. Clark,
I have reviewed the above-noted sign application for the Architectural Review Board (ARB).The following revisions to the
sign on the east, Route 29 side of the building are requested to make the proposal consistent with Entrance Corridor Sign
Guidelines. Note: ARB approval of the sign on the west side of the building is not required due to its lack of visibility from
Route 29.
1. The proposed sign does not meet approved Comprehensive Sign Criteria (CSC) specific to this development as
follows.
a. Approved CSC require channel letters with white faces. Your photo-rendering shows black face channel
letters while your sign schedule states the faces are to be white. Revise to meet approved criteria.

b. Approved CSC require bronze trim caps and returns. Your sign drawing indicates black trim caps and
returns. Revise to meet approved criteria.

2. The proposed sign does not meet Architectural Review Board General Sign Guidelines as follows:
a. The sign raceway color shall match that of the wall to which it is attached. This is not indicated on the
sign drawings.

b. The sign is not supposed to overcrowd the sign band it is located in. Note: sign band is the flat plane the
sign is located inside of. In the photo-rendering,the sign appears to be too large for the sign band. Revise
the drawing to show the perimeter of the sign band area and the distance from the top, bottom and sides
of the sign to the edge of the sign band.A minimum of 6 inches of clear area above, below and to the side
is usually appropriate.

c. Proposed colors for the logo cabinet are not listed on the sign drawing. Pantone color numbers are
required for all colors except white and black.

d. The white background of the logo cabinet is required to be opaque when illuminated.This is not indicated
on the sign drawing.

e. The following required note, limiting the intensity of the LED illumination, was not included on the sign
drawing:
The level of illumination provided by the I ED lights will nor exceed the illumination produced by a single
stroke of 30 milllamp (rnu)neon.

Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this letter indicating whether you will or will not proceed with these
revisions. Your decision to make the revisions will suspend the 60-day review period associated with your original
submittal. If you choose to complete the revisions, please email the revised drawings to me. If you choose not to proceed

with these revisions, staff will be unabto approve your application. Failure to rend to this letter shall be presumed
to be a request to proceed to action on the application without further revisions.
If you have any questions about this action,please contact me as soon as possible. I look forward to receiving your revisions
and completing this review with an approval letter.
