Re: SUB-20I6-00092 North Pointe Subdivision- Section I -- Road Plans
Dear Mr. Anderson,
We have reviewed the road plans for the North Pointe Subdivision- Section 1, dated 4/27/16 as
submitted by Townes Site Engineering and offer the following comments:
1. Please submit pavement design structural calculations for review.
2. Please submit horizontal alignment data for review.
3. PIease submit drainage calculations for review.
4. Please submit typical sections for review.
5. Sheet C-3A; The CG-12's at the intersection of CrossCreek drive and NorthFork Place
should be perpendicular. Current design is not recommended directs pedestrians to cross
in middle of intersection.
6. Sheet C-3A; NorthFork Place road current design GS-7, should be design under the
Secondary Street Acceptance requirement (SSAR) local road ApendixB 1.
7. Please submit all sight distance profiles that are applicable.
8. Sheet C-3B; The CG-12's at the Northern intersection of NorthFork drive and NorthFork
Place should be perpendicular. Current design is not recommended directs pedestrians to
cross in middle of intersection. The CG-12's at the Southern intersection of NorthFork
drive and NorthFork Place should be perpendicular. Current design is not recommended
directs pedestrians to cross in middle of intersection.
9. Roundabouts need to be sized for the appropriate design vehicle. The southern one is
adjacent to the commercial area and is likely to regularly carry larger vehicle types (wb-
50). A 150' inscribed circle will work with room for widening to the center in the future
if necessary. The northern one is located in the residential area, but adjacent to the school
site so it should be design to accommodate the standard bus (w/o tracking on the apron S
Bus-40 should work). Please submit Auto- Turn tracking diagrams for the design vehicle
for both roundabouts.
10. The Roundabout approaches do not appear to have enough of a radial curve to deflect the
approaching traffic. This is critical to slowing down traffic, please refer to NCHRP
Report 672 "Roundabout: An informational guide Second edition" for the criteria when
designing Roundabouts. The two curve method is best with a left curve than reverse to
the right. The `R' values for the three travel path needs to also be included as part of the
submission.
11. Northfork road and Northfork place should be design by using appendix B(1) GS-SSAR,
local road for volumes 2001-4000 vpd, design criteria for the collector functional class to
determine minimum design values.
12. All of the proposed curb ramps are shown with substandard widths.
13. Shared use path limits do not have logical termini, and are tied to substandard width
sidewalk or curb ramps.
14. Buffer strip widths are substandard near the proposed roundabouts.
15. Substandard entrance curbs return radii.
Please refer to VDOT's Road Design Manual, ApendixF- pages 44-45, plan submittal for
Roundabouts shall contain and depict the following criteria:
• Design speed & fastest theoretical path
• Design vehicle for Circulatory Roadway (S-BUS-36)*
• Design vehicle for Truck Apron (WB-67)
• Approach Grades/sight triangles/sight distances
• Inscribed outer diameter of circulatory roadway
• Apron composition, width, slope and curb standard
• Circulatory lane width
• Approach lane width/Deflection/radii
• Departure lane width/Deflection/radii
• Splitter island lengths/raised/flush
• Pedestrian crossing locations/width, composition, raised/flush, markings.
• Bicycle lane/approach & termination point.
• Pavement markings (directional arrows, yield lines, edge lines, etc.)
• Signing
• Roadway Lighting (preferred)
• Location of nearest entrances to outer inscribed diameter and nature of land use
• Present & design year volumes, % trucks & turning movements on all approaches
• aaSIDRA analysis on all approaches/peak hrs. LOS/queue lengths in design year
• AUTO -TURN results of Design Vehicle for all turning movements
• Planting scheme/landscaping for mounded central island and splitter islands.
• Proximity of roundabout to nearest traffic signal.
