HomeMy WebLinkAboutARB201600097 Review Comments Architectural Review Board Approval 2016-08-22Margaret Maliszewski From: Margaret Maliszewski Sent: Monday, August 22, 2016 11:21 AM To: 'Chocolatesville, LLC; 'Randall Smith' Subject: Chocolatesville sign proposal Mary Ellen and Randy, I've reviewed your revised submittal dated 8-16-16. My comments are provided below, with the original comments as reference. Text in red represents outstanding issues. 1. Identification on the drawings of the color names and numbers used for each sign. (Only "brown" is indicated for the channel letters.) 2. Samples of all colors. a. CMYK color references were provided, but the County does not have access to samples of colors referenced in this manner. Please address comments 1 and 2 by providing either Pantone color equivalents or actual color samples. 3. Identification on the drawing of the areas proposed to be opaque on the wall -mounted cabinet sign. If the sign is internally illuminated, the background of the sign must be opaque. a. This has been adequately addressed. 4. The tenant panel for the freestanding sign is oversized for the available area. The size approved for tenant panels on the freestanding sign is 23.75" x 47.75". a. This has been adequately addressed. 5. The design of the tenant panel for the freestanding sign must be compatible with the existing tenant panels. The multiple colors in your first option for the tenant panel make it incompatible. a. This has been adequately addressed. 6. Please add the following note to each of the sign drawings: The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon. a. This comment has not been addressed. Please add the note as requested. 7. The image showing the cabinet sign on the building includes a blue border. Is the blue border part of the proposal? a. This comment has been adequately addressed. 8. The channel letters have brown faces. Are you proposing that the brown will illuminate at night? Or are you proposing a day/night film? a. This question has not been answered. Please provide the clarification requested. 9. Will the brown channel letters have a white border or is that just a part of the drawing? Will the border illuminate at night? What is the width of the border? a. This question has not been answered. Please provide the clarification requested. 10. I have also noticed that a note on both of the channel letter drawings indicates that the raceway will match the color of the brick, but the raceway is not shown on a brick surface. Please revise the note to say that the raceway will match the color of the wall to which it is attached. Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this message indicating whether you will or will not proceed with the revisions listed above. If you choose to complete the revisions, please email the revisions to me, including updated revision dates on the drawings. If you choose not to proceed with these revisions, staff will be unable to approve your application. If you have any questions about this action, please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you. At yesterday's ARB meeting, the Board indicated that we can proceed with the review of the Chocolatesville signs without amending the existing Comprehensive Sign Plan for Rivanna Plaza and without creating a new plan for the Kiddie Academy building. I've looked through the sign proposal and I have the following comments. The following items were missing from your submittal: 1. Identification on the drawings of the color names and numbers used for each sign. (Only "brown" is indicated for the channel letters.) 2. Samples of all colors. 3. Identification on the drawing of the areas proposed to be opaque on the wall -mounted cabinet sign. If the sign is internally illuminated, the background of the sign must be opaque. Also, please note the following: 4. The tenant panel for the freestanding sign is oversized for the available area. The size approved for tenant panels on the freestanding sign is 23.75" x 47.75". 5. The design of the tenant panel for the freestanding sign must be compatible with the existing tenant panels. The multiple colors in your first option for the tenant panel make it incompatible. 6. Please add the following note to each of the sign drawings: The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon. And some questions: 7. The image showing the cabinet sign on the building includes a blue border. Is the blue border part of the proposal? 8. The channel letters have brown faces. Are you proposing that the brown will illuminate at night? Or are you proposing a day/night film? 9. Will the brown channel letters have a white border or is that just a part of the drawing? Will the border illuminate at night? What is the width of the border? Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this message indicating whether you will or will not proceed with the revisions listed above. Your decision to make the revisions will suspend the 60 -day review period associated with your original submittal. If you choose to complete the revisions, please email the revised drawings to me. If you choose not to proceed with these revisions, staff will be unable to approve your application. If you have any questions about this action, please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.
