:DITCH BANK SEEDINIG
Problem Area
Banks, berms or spoil areas"alvng ditches or streams that:* -are subject to
erosion and subsequent silting of channels.
Vegetation cannot be expected to afford protection to stream banks of high
velocity or frequently flooding streams. It can supplement masonry channels above
the active water line or on small streams and ditches it affords the necessary
protection for stabilizing banks.
I. Site Preparation
- -A. -In flp -n areas -spoil should be "spread and Uariks :graded so that they can
be -seeded and maintained -with-conventional equipment. '
B. Wooded areas are difficult both to seed and maintain. Where possible
large trees adjacent to streams should be left as they help to shade out
low growing woody vegetation and sprout growth that clogs channels.
C. Complete seedbed preparation is always desirable. In wooded areas it is
often necessary to seed on freshly excavated, scarified spoil and banks.
II. Lime and Fertilizer
A._ Open areas that can be graded and prepared for permanent maintenance
should have the same lime and fertilizer treatment as prescribed for
Permanent Seeding of Critical -Areas.
B. For excavated channels in wooded areas 10-10-10 fertilizer should be
uniformly spread over the disturbed areas at the rate of 1,000 pounds per
.acre within the same day the excavation is made.
III. Seeding
Seeding at the following rates and dates per acre will be made on open
graded areas as prescribed for Permanent Seeding of Critical Areas. On
wooded areas that are inaccessible to seeding equipment, seed will be uni-
formly broadcast on the disturbed areas within the same day the excavation
is made.

Reed canarygrass should be omitted from mixtures used on intermittent
streams or streams of lour velocity.

Mixtures prescribed for Permanent Seeding of Critical Areas may be substitued
dor the above on open graded areas.
IV. Mulching and Maintenance
Same as Permanent Seeding for Critical Areas on accessible open areas.
