RE: ARB -2016-118: James River Petroleum Signs
Tax Map 61, Parcel 151A
Dear Ms. Brindle,
I have reviewed the above -noted sign application. The following revisions are requested to make the
proposal consistent with the Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines. All required information pertaining to
this sign application is required to be on the sign drawing. The sign drawings are incomplete and do not
describe the proposal adequately.
1. Regarding the freestanding sign:
a. Revise the sign drawing to:
i. Include the Pantone number for the red, blue, green and yellow colors. Red
Pantone 485 has been determined to be an inappropriate shade of red. Red
Pantone 187 is considered an acceptable substitute.
ii. Indicate the sign is internally illuminated. Indicate whether the bulb is existing
to remain or to change. If bulb is to be changed to LED, include the following
note limiting the intensity of the illumination: "The level of illumination
provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination produced by a single
stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
iii. Include the following note regarding the required opaque background: "All sign
cabinets shall have an opaque background, only the text and graphics shall
illuminate."
iv. Include the following note limiting the intensity of the LED gas pricing: "Daytime
intensity of the LED gas pricing is limited to 70% of maximum intensity;
nighttime intensity is limited to 16% of maximum intensity with automatic
dimming at dusk."
v. Include both the original sign drawing date, latest revision date and the tax map
and parcel the sign is located on (Tax Map 61, Parcel 151A).
2. Regarding the large canopy Exxon signs:
a. Revise the sign drawing to:
i. Clearly show the canopy fascia elevation with the Exxon sign. The drawing
provided was too light and illegible. You cannot read the canopy edge.
ii. Indicate all proposed canopy/canopy sign materials (metal, vinyl, paint, acrylic
etc.)
iii. State whether or not the Exxon letters are to illuminate. If yes, provide a detail
showing bulb location and type, indicating whether the letters are face -lit or
halo -lit. If LED, include the following note limiting the intensity of the
illumination: "The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed
the illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon."
iv. Propose a different shade of red Pantone. Red Pantone 485 has been
determined to be an inappropriate shade of red in the Entrance Corridors. Red
Pantone 187 is considered an acceptable substitute.
v. Include the following note: "Illumination of the canopy fascia is not proposed."
vi. Include both the original sign drawing date, latest revision date and the tax map
and parcel the sign is located on (Tax Map 61, Parcel 151A).
3. Regarding the small canopy Diesel signs:
a. Revise the sign drawing to:
i. Indicate the sign type. If the sign is to be illuminated, provide a detail showing
bulb location/type and whether the letters are face -lit or halo -lit. If LED is
proposed, include the following note limiting the intensity of the illumination:
"The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the
illumination produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon."
ii. Indicate the proposed red material (paint, vinyl?).
iii. Indicate whether any structural changes are proposed for the canopy (e.g. metal
panels etc.).
iv. Include the following note: "Illumination of the canopy fascia is not proposed."
v. Include both the original sign drawing date, latest revision date and the tax map
and parcel the sign is located on (Tax Map 61, Parcel 151A).
Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this letter indicating whether you will or will not
