Re: Shadwell Antiquaries and Shadwell Convenience Store
Intersection of Route 22 and Route 250 in Albemarle County
Date: May 5, 1999
Gentlemen:
I have reviewed a site sketch from Steve Gooch to Mr. Jacques Logarides for the subject
site. The information brought to my attention thus far indicates that both businesses wish
to use a single sewage disposal system on the Antiquaries property. Based on the
consultant report, I can discern the following information:
1. Excluding the sewage disposal area within a utility easement, a 115' x 65' square foot
of land is available for drainfield. Parking over the proposed area is possible over a
portion of the area but not the entire area.
2. Given the percolation rates of the report, a total of between 412 gallons/day to 629
gallons per day (Peak Flow with no Safety Factor) can be supported with a 100
percent reserve area(latter figure based on low-pressure distribution and engineering
plans). Including the necessary safety factor of 1.6,then the average daily water flow
to this system will be between 258 GPD and 393 GPD (LPD system).
3. Considering the lower figure of 258 GPD and using the following design flows:
A. Employee=25 gallons per 8 hour day
B. Deli= 5 gallons per$100.00 food service
C. Deli will generate $500.00 to $1000.00 dollars in sales

A total usage between the deli and antiquaries building can be estimated. My estimate
would suggest that the site must be limited to 10 employees and the deli. A pump counter
or water flow meter may be necessary to conclude that the site can operate within these
design parameters.
4. A new Class IIB well may be necessary if more than 25 people will be using the
water supply more than 60 days per year. If the deli uses the water for food
preparation, then a new well and design may be necessary.
5. Additional soils work may be performed to locate more sewage disposal area and
increase design capacity. A conditional permit from the local health department will
be necessary.
