RE: ARB -2017-27: Spectrum Physical Therapy Sign
Dear Mr. Leff,
I have reviewed the above -noted sign application for the Architectural Review Board (ARB). The
following revisions to the sign on the southeast elevation of the building are requested to make the
proposal consistent with Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines. Note: ARB approval of the sign on the
northwest elevation of the building is not required due to its lack of visibility from Route 29.
1. The proposed sign does not meet Architectural Review Board General Sign Guidelines as follows:
a. An acceptable scale for channel lettering should have a ratio of 1/3 text to 2/3 wall area or
text to % wall area. The second line (i.e., "Physical Therapy") appears disproportionate to
the first line (i.e., "Spectrum"), is oversized, and therefore overwhelms and crowds the wall
area. For example, you may try reducing the scale of the second line so that the 'p' on
'Physical' aligns with the 's' on 'Spectrum,' and the 'y' on 'Therapy' aligns with the 'm' on
'Spectrum.' Please revise and resubmit drawings which address this design requirement.
b. The following required note, limiting the intensity of the LED illumination, was not included
on the sign drawing:
The level of illumination provided by the LED lights will not exceed the illumination
produced by a single stroke of 30 milliamp (ma) neon.
Please respond by email within 15 days of the date of this letter indicating whether you will or will not
proceed with these revisions. Your decision to make the revisions will suspend the 60 -day review period
associated with your original submittal. If you choose to complete the revisions, please email the revised
drawings to me. If you choose not to proceed with these revisions, staff will be unable to approve your
application. Failure to respond to this letter shall be presumed to be a request to proceed to action on
the application without further revisions.
If you have any questions about this action, please contact me as soon as possible. I look forward to
receiving your revisions and completing this review with an approval letter.
Sincerely,
Heather N. McMahon, Senior Planner
