RE: ARB -2016-110: Mattress Firm - Sign (Route 29 & Rio Road)
Dear Ms. Baker,
I have reviewed the above -noted sign application. The following revisions are requested to make the
proposal consistent with the Entrance Corridor Sign Guidelines and the buildings Comprehensive Sign
Plan (CSP).
SIGN A: WALL (RIO ROAD)
1. Revise the trim cap color to be bronze as specified in the buildings CSP.
2. The CSP specifies a maximum height for the sign of 3'. Reduce the size of the sign to meet that
criteria.
3. Specify on the sign plan the dimensions, including the height, of Sign Band area.
4. Specify on the sign plan the square footage of the Sign Band area. A ratio of 1/3 text to 2/3 wall
area or 1/4 text to 3/4 wall area is a good working proportion system for placing a sign. Review
the proportion of the area of the channel letters and the "swoosh" to Sign Band area and update
the size of the sign as appropriate.
5. Provide Pantone equivalent color numbers for the colors. Colors must be harmonious with each
other, must not clash with other elements on the site, both when viewed in daylight and at night,
and overly intense colors are prohibited. The yellow color will be evaluated on these criteria
once the pantone equivalent number for that color is provided.
6. Remove specifications for "backer panel" from the sign plan. Wall signs are to be integrated with
the architecture of the building and they should not obscure architectural features or details
therefore backer panels are not allowed.
7. Provide information on the back of the channel letters that specifies the material is opaque and
that the letters are sealed so that no light will leak from the returns, back or corners.
8. The CSP specifies that the channel letters will be mounted directly to the wall. Update the sign
plan for this mounting method, removing the information on a raceway.
9. Revise the red LED lights specified to be white. The CSP specifies that the letter face color is to
be either white or blue (PMS 280M). Red internal lights would make the letters appear red at
night which is not allowed by the CSP.
10. Center the sign in the Sign Band area. The sign does not appear to be centered horizontally.
11. Specify on the sign plan the date of the initial submission.
12. Specify on the sign plan the revision date of the most recent submission.
13. Dimension the width of the outline around the text. An outline width of 1/8" is the appropriate
sign dimension. The outline of the text should be included in the text height.
SIGN B: WALL (ROUTE 29)
1. Provide Pantone equivalent color numbers for the colors. Colors must be harmonious with each
other, must not clash with other elements on the site, both when viewed in daylight and at night
and overly intense colors are prohibited. The yellow color will be evaluated on these criterial
once the pantone equivalent number for that color is provided.
3. Remove specifications for "backer panel" from the sign plan. Wall signs are to be integrated with
the architecture of the building and they should not obscure architectural features or details
therefore backer panels are not allowed.
4. Provide information on the back of the channel letters that specifies the material is opaque and
that the letters are sealed so that no light will leak from the returns, back or corners.
5. The CSP specifies that the channel letters will be mounted directly to the wall. Update the sign
plan for this mounting method, removing the information on a raceway.
6. Specify on the sign plan the date of the initial submission.
7. Specify on the sign plan the revision date of the most recent submission.
8. Dimension the width of the outline around the text. An outline width of 1/8" is the appropriate
sign dimension. The outline of the text should be included in the text height.
SIGN C: FREE STANDING (ROUTE 29)
1. Revise the letters to black, as specified in the building's CSP for free standing signs. If an outline
is still desired it should be white, blue (PMS 280M) or gold (PMS 129M).
2. Revise the underlining "swoosh" color to either black or white in order to meet the CSP and
match the graphics shown on the existing signs.
3. In the sign plan specify which items are the specific color (ex. Text: ### Glossy Black, Outline:
White, etc.).
4. Specify on the sign plan "Square Feet of Sign: XX Square Feet" (specify the square footage of the
sign)
5. Specify on the sign plan the date of the initial submission.
6. Specify on the sign plan the revision date of the most recent submission.
