Mr. J. W. Willi~_s, Chairman of the Sheriff's Committee, presenting to the Board a report on
the hospital and funeral expenses of Thomas W. Wolfe which amounted to $1,730.00 over and above the
amount received from the Blue Cross Hospitalization Ins~rance which Mr. Wolfe carried. He further re-
ported that Mr. Wolfe lef~ twof:dependents, his wife and a son now in the Engineering School of the
University of Virginia. Mr. Williams stated that had Mr. Wolfe been covered by Workmen's Compensation,
his widow would have received $20.00 per week for 300 weeks. On this basis, Mr. Williams recommended
that the County pay Mrs. Wolfe $40.00 per week for 15~ weeks, the time during which she would be the
most benefited due to her son's education, and in addition a lump sum of $1,730.00.
Mr. Downing L. Smith, Commonwealth's Attorney, advised the Hoard that the statute provides
for compensation to dependents of sheriffs and deputies and also a lump sum contribution, but gives no
authority for the' ~aymen% by the County of hospital or funeral expenses, and advised the Boar~ against
identifying any action with the payment of such expenses.
Mr. D. A. Robinson was requested to contact the Social Security Office in Sta~_uton regarding
the Benefits to which Mrs. Wolfe would be entitled.
After a full discussion, this matter was taken under advisement to be passed on at~ the nex~
regular meeting.
Upon motion, the meeting adjourned.
